| with comments from Philip Grosset "Thanks for a really great web site. The information you provide is very helpful. I recently bought myself a Fuji 4900 digital camera which I am very pleased with. The resolution is good enough to print good quality enlargements, and downloading and printing is equally as easy. I have attached 3 pictures for you to comment on when you get a chance. Two of the pictures, Castello and Lake Garda were taken in Italy on the the shores of Lake Garda in Malcesine where we recently went on holiday. After renting a little power boat, I managed to get out on the water and take loads of pictures of the castle and other interesting shots. I thought that the castle definitely deserved to be in black and white, which gives it a bit more of an "eerie" feel to it. The other Lake Garda shot was just of a few trees I noticed, and couldn't help myself! With the incredible mountains in the background it really is quite interesting. The last picture is of my 4 day old daughter. I have taken many snaps of her already in the short time she's been around, but I really like the innocence of this picture. Please let me know what you think. Regards." (Gunter Pibernik, Pamber Heath, UK.) |

| It was a very good idea to hire a boat and take your photo from the lake. This provides a most unusual view of the castle at Malcesine. |

| The interesting part of your photo on the left is the foreground, so in my version on the right I've tried concentrating on that. The side of the mountain in the background isn't really sharp enough to be seen properly |

| I'm very impressed by this photo of your daughter. The extreme close-up works really well. Congratulations! | |||||||||||||||||
Reply from Gunter Pibernik: "Many thanks for the speedy response and your comments on my pictures. They are appreciated and comments noted!" "Thanks for this wonderful service. My eyes however are buggy from looking at all those pics but I learned alot .My Canon EOS rebel was a yard sale find for $10.00.It had a 50 mm lens which the auto focus did not work. I have since purchased a 75-300mm lens which I am very happy with. I feel I use the auto features way too much but I just can not get the hang of f-stops and exposures just yet. the first photo I have enclosed was taken with the 50 mm lens. I have cropped the picture some to get rid of the empty spot on the right. I would like to know what you think. the second was taken with my new lens. I feel the image might be ruined by the tree branches on the left. what do you think. Thank you so much again for such a wonderful service." (Donna McGee, Florida) |

| The flying hair makes your photo on the left attractive. However it could be improved, as on the right, by straightening out the horizon, and by positioning the subject's eyes at the intersection of thirds (there's an explanation of this at the foot of this page). But it's a good picture from such a bargain camera, and using the sky background was very effective. |

I agree with you that this picture would be much better without the intrusive branches on the left (and on the top right). It would also be better to show the other side of the flag so that it doesn't look reversed. | ||||||||||||||||
"Hi, I love photography and this was taken by chance with my Olympus digital camera outside my house! Your valued opinion please." (Sue Elliott) |

| This is a fine dramatic sunset but, for me, the cables that stretch diagonally across the middle of the the picture rather spoil the effect. You could always remove them with an image editing program! It would then be an even more effective photo. Reply from Sue Elliott: "Hi. Thanks for your opinion, I have only just discovered your website and spent over 2 hours yesterday looking through it! I feel I have already learnt several things from you and look forward to putting them into practise. I'll send you the results! My photo would look better without the cables, I agree, but as I was watching TV at the time and just happened to see the colours through the window I just grabbed my camera and captured it. Thanks." |
