| On March 23rd 1918, a Royal Flying Corps aircraft landed on the meadow on the opposite side of the river, where the fighter pilot is said to have asked some boys the way back to the nearby Wyton airfield. He then took off and crashed into the spire of the parish church, most of which fell into the north aisle and caused much damage. The pilot was killed. The spire was not restored until 1923-4. This was the fourth time in its history that the spire had to be rebuilt. |
