| Sheep pens on Market Hill, probably photographed soon before October1886. What is now the (United Reformed) Free Church (centre background) was built in 1864-5, with a spire that tradition says was deliberately made a few feet higher than that of the parish church - but modern measurements have shown that this is not so! The Free Church is a lively and welcoming place that was extensively remodelled inside in 1979-80, when it was divided into two floors. There is more about it on the More Places to See page. |

The view the other way (also c1899), with the Free Church in the left background, and The Old Robin Hood pub on the extreme left. There's still a Robin Hood pub there today. The very wide road was needed to accomodate the market. | ||||||||||
