For Mac users

Some useful sources of information

I began with a Mac Performa 630, then moved on via a G3 to an iMac. For the main Mac references on this site, please see:

info about my computer
blinking question mark
blue tint on monitor
PRAM battery
slow working
use with PaperPort
use with Ram Doubler
need for more RAM
need for reformatting disk
type 1 errors
spinning beach ball with Mac OS X (Jaguar)
reinstalling Appleworks with Mac OS X
losing new Favorites with Explorer

My reviews of Mac OS X (10.2 and 10.3), the Power Macintosh G3 , the iMac and other Mac items are on the Software/hardware page. Also see information on zapping the PRAM, and on free internet service providers. For some really useful programs, also see Quit CSM and Applications Wizard, Drag Thing. and, if you use iPhoto, don't miss iPhoto Library Manager.

Apple's .Mac service offers email addresses (but my service provider already provides this), iDisk, where home pages etc can be stored (but there is no ftp and access is painfully slow), a back-up provision (but it is very limited and slow), and Virex (but I could never get the automatic updating to work). There are also members' pages and a few downloads - but I never used these. And they charge a lot for this! As far as I am concerned, I'm not renewing my subscription.

Computer books: one of the best books for the Mac is the THE MACINTOSH BIBLE, published by Peachpit Press - although it is expensive in the UK! I can also recommend MAC OSX: THE MISSING MANUAL by David Pogue, published by Pogue Press/O'Reilly, MY iMAC by Andrew Gore etc, published by IDG Books Worldwide, and the VISUAL QUICKSTART guides, published by Peachpit Press.
If you're struggling with iTunes, iMovies, iPhoto and/or iDVD, I can thoroughly recommend THE MACINTOSH iLIFE by Jim Heid (Peachpit Press). This is a most attractively laid out interactive guide, with over 90 minutes of really good video on its accompanying DVD. Available at a discount from Amazon.

A very good on-line source of Mac information and resources, with an effective search engine: MACINTOSH OS
