Digital Photography
Digital Photography
This book by Steve Bavister is an excellent all-round introduction to the subject, that I'd highly recommend for beginners. It is easy to understand and very well illustrated.

Digital Photography Workbook
The Digital Photography Workbook
The best simple introduction to image editing - and it doesn't just confine itself to Photoshop. Excellently illustrated and invaluable for beginners.

How to Photograph Your Baby
9 simple fold-out lessons from Nick Kelsh with excellent illustrations, showing. for example, the importance of getting in really close, and the advantages of using existing light rather than flash. Ingenious advice too on how to make a baby smile. Excellent for the beginner who wants a minimum of technical information.

How to photograph your family
How to Photograph Your Family
More excellent advice from Nick Kelsh: 9 non-technical but very helpful fold-out lessons on how to secure really pleasing pictures of family members of all ages, mostly illustrated by the author's own excellent family photos. It's all summed up by: "Get closer. Shoot more film. Turn off your flash." Highly recommended.

The Art of Photographing Nature
The joint work of a well-known nature photographer, and a picture editor, this has 250 high quality color illustrations.

God is at Eye Level
God Is At Eye Level: Photography as a Healing Art
Jan Phillips' highly personal and very unusual exploration of how "photography is as much about seeing inside ourselves as it is about looking out at the world"- although it's not really for those who're looking for a conventional reference book. Illustrated by some good (b&w) photos.

How to Photograph Pets
For useful tips about photographing pets, have a look at How to Photograph Pets by Nick Ridley. It is a book that I can thoroughly recommend.

I'm often asked for advice about becoming a professional photographer. For information about the USA, try Opportunities in Photography Careers by Seichi Konzo and others. If you're thinking about going freelance in the USA, there's the highly praised and very well illustrated Photos That Sell by Lee Frost, that offers advice not only about markets but on how to take the sort of photos that really sell.

UK readers can also look for the original British version of Photos That Sell by Lee Frost (this link will take you to Amazon.co.uk.).

f you live in the UK, you can reduce mailing costs on all books by using a UK based supplier. Search for what you want here:
