Levenshulme has undergone an invigoration programme in the last three years ,spending millions of pounds funded by the A6 Partnership hopeing to transform the area into a community people are proud to live in.
I have seen the changes taking effect over the past three years, and now I am able to show you ,in pictures how Levenshulme looks today.
I will start my journey  in the North part of  the district and work my way South.
Levenshulme regenerated
Its August 15th 2003,and its a beautiful summers day. This view shows the junction of Mathews Lane and Stockport Road.
In the distance one can see the Farmers Arms and to the far right stands the Midway Pub.New traffic signals have been installed, one of the many improvements to the Stockport Road corridor.
As I get closer to the junction I take a photo of the Farmers Arms Pub.Two years ago the building on the left hand side of the pub  was partly demolished due to a car careering off Stockport Road and smashing into the side.It is now fully repaired .
Does anyone remember when it used to be a hardware shop?
Turning left and looking towards The Cong church, parking bays have been created leaving Stockport Road one way traffic on both sides. This has been controversial, but there were no queues of  stationary traffic, although it was the middle of the afternoon.Every other shop is a takeaway. You will never go hungry in Levenshulme!!

Looking over the road one can see the Wesleyan Methodist church which was built over 100 years ago.The tower was taken down in the 1950s however the church is still in regular use.

Crossing over Stockport Road and looking south money has been spent on new rugged pavement surfaces,at pelican crossings. These are ideal for those people that are visually inpaired.
Also in this picture you can see new street lighting and new tarmaced pavements.
.
House prices have doubled in Levenshulme over the past eighteen months, and a typical terraced house can now expect to be sold at around £60,000.(Aug2003)
Many first time buyers are finding Levenshuleme the ideal choice to get on the property ladder.
.Many  retail businesses are now investing and moving back into the Levenshulme area.
As  well as the huge selection of Antique shops that Levenshulme is famous for,it now has a wonderful variety of fast food outlets to savour.
The view  on the top right shows a recently opened Pound shop  that has many bargains inside!
Paving slabs in a variety of colours and brand new bus stops.-and no litter to be seen!!
New trees have been planted on Stockport Road, and really makes the area look good.
Lets just hope they dont get vandalized!
New traffic islands on Stockport Road making it a safer place to cross.

A closer look at the improved predestion crossing at the junction of Albert Road and Stockport Road.I notice the road is a lot narrower than it used to be.This in turn does cause congestion, especially at peek times.

The row of shops just pass Albert Road,in my opionion always looked run down and in need of a good makeover.
Well this has now been done, and each shop sports a different coloured livery of brickwork. It works very well, and adds a lot of colour to the area.
More parking bays, which run right though Levenshulme are situated outside the Lloyds TSB Bank.

Levenshulme has always had a good bus service.
The "Magic Bus" which was passing at the time I took this photo belongs to Stagecoach.
The 192 bus has a frequency on a weekday of every couple of minutes.I dont think its ever changed,as far as I can remember.
It got me thinking of before the buses were deregulated. Remember the 189 which used to run from Stockport to Albert Square and the 94 which ran from Lloyd road to Southern Cemetery?

What a history this magnificent building has had.Purposely built to be used as a cinema it later changed into a bowling ally and then into  a bingo hall.
A couple of  years ago it was again transformed into a furniture warehouse, until just recently it has opened again as a 1000 seater restaurant.

Well this is my final photo of Stockport Road looking towards Albert Road showing  newly planted trees and wonderful hanging baskets.
All in all I think Levenshulme will benefit from these vast improvements. Not many areas in Manchester have had so much money pumped into  an area that was in decline.
I think now Levenshulme  people can hold there heads high.It is once again becoming a place for people to be proud of.
