Our Conductor - David Wright

 

David Wright was born in Glasgow in 1958. He studied trumpet, conducting and singing in Edinburgh where he was appointed to a part-time teaching post at Daniel Stewart's and Melville College, a position which became full-time when he completed his studies. During this time he was very busy as a condutor of various orchestras, bands and opera companies.

 

In 1979 he was a finalist in the Young Conductor's competition organised by the National Association of Brass Band Conductors and in 1985 was the only British competitor selected to take part in the International Conductor's Competition at the Wereld Muziek Concours in Kerkrade, Holland. In 1988 he moved south to be Head of Brass at Charterhouse, where he now conducts the bands and orchestras. He is musical director of the Godalming Band and chairman of the No. 1 Area of the NABBC. He is very interested in music for young people and is on the committee of Godalming Music for Youth as well as many societies for the promotion of music in the area.

 

At the SCABA Autumn Contest (October 1993) in Folkestone he was awarded the Conductor's Prize "The Bob & Penny Tucker Trophy" for the most musical interpretation of the test piece. He appears in the International Who's Who in Music.

 

David also conducts the Godalming Youth Orchestra
