The Godalming Band

A picture of the front row cornets

Based in the South West corner of Surrey, three miles from the county town of Guildford, the Godalming Band has been in existence in its current form since 1937 and boasts both an active Senior and Youth band. The membership is a cross section of people, of all ages living in the local community.

Thanks to the generosity of the people of Godalming and the surrounding area, the band has remained a self-supporting organisation, raising our own funds for the instruments, music and uniforms we require through regular public performances in and around the Godalming area, at a variety of venues including concert halls, bandstands, outdoor concerts and a selection of local shows and fetes. The band also take a pride in fundraising for local good causes, recent concerts have been held for The Phyllis Tuckwell Memorial Hospice, Chiddingfold Primary School and the Godalming Parish Church.

Under their current Musical Director, David Wright, the band have given many outstanding concerts and have given first performances of many new pieces including "Mystery Play" by David Lancaster, "Pantheon" by Keith Amos and "Bourdon des Alpes" by Gary Brooker (of Procul Harum fame).

Not content with second place in previous years, this year the band went to Addlestone entertainments contest in a more determined frame of mind, and came away winners. Also congratulation must go to two of our percussionists, who bravely got out to the front and sang Rossini’s Duet For Two Cats, which earned them the soloists prize.

Godalming - 1st Prize (3rd Section)

Ray Pont (Band Chairman) collects the cup for first prize at Hove Contest.

Godalming Band continued their winning form at the SCABA Hove contest on Sunday 6th April 2008, winning first place in our section as well as David Wright winning the conductor’s prize again and our flugel horn player Keith Rowling once again winning the soloist prize. This time we played the march Westward Ho and the test piece Hinemoa - a piece which the band obviously enjoyed playing. On leaving the stage our newest player, Stephen Kingsbury, said “that was amazing” - how right he was!
