Rebuild of Silver 1984 GTE

Vauxhall Astra MkI GTE, First registered 10/8/84, bought January 1999.  Silver, Factory Fitted Sunroof, Hella front spot lights (not working).  8 former owners, MOT’d until May ‘99, Taxed until end of April ‘99.  Mileage on clock believed to be 116,000Exchange engine, ran smoothly and delivered power expected.  Sound exhaust, no blowing noises, new rear exhaust box.

Bodywork appear to be sound, and chassis appeared to be reasonable.  Tailgate well rotted at bottom of window and also bottom edge.  Some rust showing through on wings.  Some fiber glass work done to drivers door needing tiding up.  Passenger side door, lock mechanism not working, both window winders working fine.  Repairs to outer sills noticed, on the rear off side and near side.  Wheels had been replaced by those from a Cavalier SRI, same design but recesses black, as opposed to all silver.

Interior better than expected, driver seat side support sponge deteriorated, needs replacing.   Tachometer not working (suspected resistor blown) Heated rear window not working.  Heater motor not working properly.

First Task - Remove body kit.

Found sills, rear wheel arches and rear valance to be excessively corroded.  The car stayed off the road from here to begin restoration.   Set about buying replacement panels, i.e. sheet steel, front wings, outer sills, rear wheel arches, back valance, lower rear wing panels and a good second hand firstpic.jpg (48231 bytes)tail gate.

Removed front drivers side wing to begin cutting away drivers side sill, rear wheel arch and lower rear wing.  Having done so, started repairing inner sill, cleaning up and rust protecting with rust remedy,  aluminum paint.

Bulk Head

Steering rack mounting brackets found to be moving with steering rack.  Sound deadening attached to bulk head under bonnet had been holding water and had rotted away the bulk head.  The interior was remember and all the rust cut away.
