There is something quite remarkable about the durability of this humble league and its member clubs as we enter our 29th season. While “29” in cricketing terms is of little significance it takes on great significance in the context of a small club cricket league such as ours, dwarfed by the larger, Surrey leagues. We are the second oldest Surrey league after the I’Anson which was founded at the beginning of the century. Our origins lie in what might best be described as a “working party” which was set up in 1970. This group was made up of representatives of a considerable number of clubs in the Guildford area who were interested in forming a league. After two years of fruitless deliberations 13 of these clubs finally agreed on a structure and set of rules for a league competition. This competition began in 1973 and so was born the Wey Valley Cricket League. In 1973 the league consisted of two 13 club divisions, for 1st and 2nd X1s respectively, and a separate “minor” league for smaller clubs which only had the capacity to field one X1. This structure survived until the end of 1994 when the league took on a new structure; the second X1 was abolished. However it should be noted that the minor league became the Second Division in 1975 when promotion and relegation was also introduced. In 2002 many of the larger clubs moved to other leagues, leaving us with just one division of 10 teams. But as the 2002 season is about to start new clubs are already showing an interest in joining our league for 2003. In 1978 the Morrant Group became our first and to date our only sponsors. |
