Bernwode Amnesty Group: Newsletter

OCTOBER 2009

We were delighted by the success of our Barn Dance on 10th October. So many people helped: the artistic folk who created the many and varied discs, the table flower arrangements maker, the musicians, the cabaret artistes, the pudding makers, poster designer and sellers of tickets. Our barn dancers were definitely "up for it" and danced their socks off.

We thank them all very warmly. They helped us raise a net total of over £700 which we will send to Amnesty International as a contribution to their work for human rights. A lot of careful research needs to be done to document these abuses so that powerful cases can be made to try and tackle them. This requires funding and that is why we try to raise funds when we can.

Our next meeting will be on Monday 7th December at 8pm in the Red Lion.

JULY 2009

At our AGM in July we decided to simplify our committee set-up by abolishing formal roles and running as more of a collective. The main aim was to reduce the burden of paperwork carried by the secretary. We learned that Amnesty International do allow groups to run in this more informal way. We will continue to meet every month in the Red Lion, concentrating on writing letters as requested by AI and supporting particular campaigns. As ever, newcomers will be welcome to come along and join us.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 9th September at 8pm in the Red Lion. Brill.

We are also looking forward to our BARN DANCE on Saturday 10th October in Brill Memorial Hall.
Tickets will soon be on sale. Please see our poster around the village.

JUNE 2009

At our meeting in June we discussed the International Arms Treaty proposals and sent a letter to David Miliband urging him to ensure that the UK fully supports and endorses this treaty which we hope will at least reduce the numbers of innocent civilians who lose their lives worldwide because of the vast quantities of arms so easily acquired by undemocratic regimes and militias.

We are holding our AGM on Sunday 19th July kindly hosted by Katherine and Phil Collins in their garden, from 3pm. There will be a short meeting at 3.30pm followed by a barbecue at 4pm. We warmly welcome all members - and non-members. Just let one of us know if you would like to come.

We also worked on arrangements for our grand fund raising BARN DANCE on Saturday 10th October in Brill Memorial Hall. Alan Horton and his band will be playing, lovely puddings, cheese and a bar will be on offer, together with a cabaret featuring our very own local stars of comedy and song... You just can't miss it. Put the date in your diary now.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 9th September at 8pm in the Red Lion. Brill.

MAY 2009

At our meeting in May we again focussed on Colombia. It was good to hear that Sinaltrainal, the food workers' union whose members are frequently threatened and intimidated because of their efforts to secure justice for their members, had sent messages of thanks to Amnesty for our support.
We discussed the opening of a dialogue between Cuba and President Obama's government which we hope will lead to better conditions if not release of the Cuban dissidents whom we are trying to support.
We are holding our AGM on Sunday 19th July kindly hosted by Katherine and Phil Collins in their garden from 3pm. There will be a short meeting at 3.30pm followed by a barbecue at 4pm. We warmly welcome all members - and non-members.

Arrangements for our grand BARN DANCE on Saturday 10th October are well underway. Alan Horton and his band will be playing, lovely puddings, cheese and a bar will be on offer, and there will be a cabaret not to be missed... Put the date in your diary now.

Our next meeting is on Wednesday 10th June at 8pm in the Red Lion. Brill. Please do feel very welcome to just turn up and listen or join in if you would like to find out more about what we do.
