More than 60 people from Cambridgeshire, including 6
from the Cambridge WDM Group, joined over 12,000 people from all over UK for
the biggest mass lobby of Parliament ever on Wednesday 19 June 2002. They
went to lobby MPs, demanding an end to the unfair rules that control world
trade.
“We Want Trade Justice” say Jean and Bernard
Crowds queuing to enter Parliament The Lobby was held just before three international
meetings – of the EU, then the G8 in Canada and the Earth Summit in
Johannesburg in August – where trade is on the agenda. People at the Lobby
made the strong point that a deep injustice is being done to many poor people
around the world in the name of free trade. What that really means is that
Third World markets get swamped by highly subsidized goods from America and
Europe, so that local farmers cannot compete and lose their livelihoods. People met with five of the county’s MPs on a day
when over 250 MPs were lobbied. The queue was so long and the crowd so great
that Anne Campbell, MP for Cambridge City, had to come out and fetch those
who had made arrangements to meet her. Over 40 people then had an hour’s
discussion with MrsCampbell inside the House of Commons, covering a range of
trade issues.

Outside Westminster Hall The Trade Justice Movement is a fast growing
coalition of over 35 organisations
which are calling for fundamental changes to the unjust rules
governing international trade to make them fair for all. Members include the
World Development Movement, Oxfam, Christian Aid, Save the Children, CAFOD
and Friends of the Earth. Follow-up Letter from Anne Campbell
