1. MINUTES FROM MEETING 18 Jan 2006 approved
as a correct record with amendments to item 5.
2. Matters Arising
a) Letter from Lord
Warner Minister of Health. Sue to reply suggesting that UK could offer UK
medical staff to fill the gaps left by the emigration of doctors and nurses
from poor countries, perhaps by offering it as an option to UK doctors for a
new kind of elective year or option for medics of 60yrs + wanting a change.
b) Fairtrade Guide to Cambridge Updated Waiting to hear from Roots & Shoots and Just Living
by end February about their research on which places sell Fairtrade goods and
what these goods are so this update can me made. Sue already found four new FT
outlets to add. Please send any more to Sue to add.
c) Fairtrade Cafˇ Crawl for FT Fortnight 6 – 19 March
2006 (Correction of Jan 06 minutes item
5)
Students are running a Fairtrade
stall in big SainsburyÕs, ColdhamÕs Lane and other actions are planned. Agreed
to ShilpaÕs idea that our WDM group would run a Fairtrade Cafˇ Crawl on
Saturday 11 March,
visiting cafes around the city with balloons, face painting etc awarding
certificates to those selling Fairtrade products and giving info to those not
doing so. Warn all establishments beforehand by letter that this is to happen.
Sub group of Shilpa, Mike, Sue, Pat, Raju agreed to organise this event.
Queries to Shilpa.
3. Speaker Meeting 14 Feb at Clare College ŅWhere Next For Make
Poverty History? Moving Forward for Global Economic JusticeÓ Speakers Kofi
Mawuli-Klu of the Pan African Task Force for International
Dialogue and Vicky Cann WDM HQ Campaigns Officer
Very successful public meeting with
about 50 people attending. Vicky spoke about trade justice and Kofi spoke about
racism. Essay by Peggy Mackintosh USA 1990 on racism ŅWhite Privilege etcÓ (available
from Aidan) makes KofiÕs point. Vicky's contribution had rather more content to
it than Kofi's, but Kofi's more challenging & provoked more thought, reflected
in the relative number of questions that each speaker got afterwards. Raju made
an excellent chair combining wit and tact with good timing. Many thanks to him
and Jenny for securing the room for us. Either Sue W or Katherine Bosman from
WDM HQ will write up the talks so ask them for copies. Clear message needs
circulating that MPH had no African content and how can we right that? Ask
wider membership how we can follow this meeting and keep up momentum. Ideas to
Sue.
4. Campaign
Leaflet Still need quotes for printing. Mike
offered to get 2 for us. Text almost final. Can decide on how many to print
when we get these quotes to compare and Julian sends us end/year accounts.
5. AOB Letter from Jubilee Debt
Campaign
Invitation from Susie Broadly asking
us join this JD campaign. Aidan said as WDM is to scale down its Debt
campaigning we should join. Cost £25 for full info with membership. We can support without paying. Beth to
reply saying we would like to join but at present have big financial
commitments so cannot promise money. When campaigns leaflet finished, our way
should be clearer to support them fully.
6. AOB Cambridge Action Network
