Mums for Mums

Mums for Mums is helping young single mothers in Mekele, Tigray, Northern Ethiopia to find the means to support themselves and their families. They do this through providing courses to give training and work experience in sewing, woodwork and knitting skills. Mums for Mums also provide counsellors for a door-to-door campaign against HIV/AIDS. A number of these counsellors have found permanent jobs as a result of their work. See the Mums for Mums website for more information, including how you can donate directly.

Mums for Mums is gaining a lot of recognition and support, particularly for its HIV/AIDS counselling work. The Mekele Municipality has given Mums for Mums a plot of land in recognition of the value of their work to the community. This means they can build new premises and move out of the metal transportation containers they presently occupy. But they have to start erecting the building within six months.

Friends of Ethiopian Children in Need (FECIN) sent £2,500 in May 2004 to Mums for Mums so they can start their building. This was raised through stalls and Jumble sales in the Cambridge area and through generous contributions from Great St Mary’s, the Cambridge University Church.
