The next Jumble Sale will be on Saturday 5th March 2011 at 2pm at St. Mary’s Church Hall, Sawston.

Mums4Mums is hosting three days of celebrations (7th-9th April 2011) to mark ten years of work dedicated to the eradication of poverty. In thanks for our support, FECIN has been invited to join these celebrations and five members will be travelling to Ethiopia (at their own expense) to contribute to this momentous occasion. FECIN has recognised the importance of Mums4Mums’ achievement with a gift of £2000 sent in January 2011.

In September 2010, FECIN funded new desks and chairs for the school and kindergarten at Alshady Orphanage, as well new science laboratory equipment. Individual FECIN members Val and Rowan paid for installing new school lavatories.

FECIN members Chris Cook and Abraha Derso visited recently and pictures from their visits can be seen here.

Mums4Mums received a prestigious STARS Foundation Award on 15th October 2009, see here. Subsequently FECIN applied to Comic Relief for funds to extend the AIDS/HIV work of Mums4Mums into Southern Tigray, but was not successful.

We sent £10,500 to the Alshady Orphanage in March 2009 to buy new water pumps. Click here to read their report.

Our friend, Teberah Inquai, was a refugee in Cambridge for 17 years. She finally returned to her native Tigray in northern Ethiopia in 1994. She visited before she went back to see how things were and was so shocked by the state of children left without families because of the war that she started a support group for them in Cambridge among her friends. This is how FECIN started.

Friends of Ethiopian Children in Need supports two projects in Ethiopia - the Alshady Orphanage at Wukro, near Mekele, Tigray and the Mums for Mums project at Mekele. Notable successes include:

·        Vital food supplies when the orphanage was without funds.

·        Training for 15 adult orphans in carpentry and building skills, providing them with a tool kit on graduation so they could get jobs. They are all now employed.

·        Furniture consisting of desks and benches, shelves and tables.

·        £3,000 sent to the Alshaday Orphanage in March 2003 to install a vital water connection for the orphanage shower block. This was only possible with additional support from Great St Mary’s, the Cambridge University Church.

In 2004 we started assisting an NGO set up by Teberah in May 2001 to help and support single mothers - Mums for Mums. £3,500 was sent in May 2004 to contribute to the expansion of the project. During Teberah’s visit to Cambridge in 2005, an additional £10,500 was raised towards a new building for Mums for Mums.
