Practical Help To Practical People Overseas

Tools for Self Reliance (TFSR) supports workers in some of the world's poorest countries. We help grassroots development projects in Africa by providing refurbished handtools and sewing machines. TFSR volunteers around the United Kingdom ship tools worth more than £500,000 each year to partner organisations in Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Mozambique, Sierra Leone and Ghana. From the Orkneys to the Channel Islands, there are nearly 70 groups refurbishing tools and 100 tool collection points


The Cambridge Tools for Self Reliance meets regularly in Waterbeach (9 miles north of Cambridge Centre), in an attractive rural Fen setting.  We have been steadily growing:

New members are always welcome to help us refurbish tools. No experience necessary.

Donating Tools

You can leave any handtools (e.g. chisels, planes, hand-drills, saws etc) or sewing machines (no garden tools please) you want to donate at the following locations in Cambridge:

  • The Hire Counter at Ridgeons, Cromwell Road
  • MacKays, East Road

Please note we want useable tools that need cleaning and sharpening not broken, wornout tools !
