"The Trees of Acklam"
Ancient Trees
Although only a few of the trees of Acklam qualify as 'ancient' the remnants of the
trees of the Acklam Manor form an enclave of old woodland which is rare in the Teeside
area. Such patches of woodland are refuges for wildlife; the full value for biodiversity
is only achieved if the full range of growth is present. Undergrowth, new trees, old trees
and dead and dying trees all play a part in the interactions of woodland ecology. It is in
dead wood that there is a particularly rich growth of insect life -- and it is on insects
that so much of the wildlife of the woods depends.
