Map of Great Wood from the Ordnance Survey New Popular Edition; published 1945 but largely based on 1930s surveys. Suggests that the camp and NE part of the Wood were more open at that time. This is backed up by the 1930s Land Utilisation map, which can be found here (select 3rd map), which shows this area as "Heathland, Moorland and Rough Pasture". Compare with modern OS map here.
