1954/55

Jack Siemon returned in the nets with most of last seasons team in front of him. Out went Horb, Dougherty and Maslenko. To be replaced by Kenny Westman, one time Nottingham captain and former Harringay star, George Chin, first Chinaman to play on the British circuit and his team mate Pat Cooney. Coach Stinchcombe hoped that with Westman, recently a defenceman, converted again to a winger, would solve the problem of who to play with scintillating Zamick and Strongman. Nottingham Panthers 1954 English National League Champions came within a hairs breadth of taking the British League title. Panthers, loaded with All-Stars- Siemon, Lorne Smith, Watson, Zamick & Strongman and with plenty of experience elsewhere, were with Harringay, pre season favourites. Four losses from six games however put them out of the betting. Coach Stinchcombe was unmoved by the defeats "I have a big team. They're slow to get into condition. They'll be ready when they're wanted." Bill Creasey (Paisley Manager) interjected "They'll be the team to beat for the championship." Both were 99% right. As the season wound down it became obvious that only Panthers and Harringay would be interested in the championship. Friday April 29th at Nottingham was the big night. Panthers had to win this one. Racers led, Panthers equalised. Lilley put Racers ahead, Zamick levelled. Then came disaster. Siemon dropped too soon and Miller scored. Denny twice broke away to give Racers a commanding lead. The final score was 5-8. But there were compensations for Panthers. Zamick was again the leading scorer and he and Strongman were voted to the All-Star "A" Team. Siemon and Watson made the "B" Team.
