1952/53 |
Before the season started, I was one of many who figured it might well be
another big season for the Nottingham club. The old guard of Strongman, Zamick and Casey
had been retained and the ever worrying Bill Ringer was still with us. On defence
James and McDonald had gone, but Allen and Watson were still available. Hap Finch had arrived
to guard the net and we all knew he could be the outstanding goalie of the year - if
things went smoothly. New blood had been introduced by obtaining the signatures of Lorne
Smith and Tommy Greig on defence. They were big boys with reputations to match. Up front
Ed Bury and Keith Peters were expected to do great things. It looked to be a well balanced
club.
The doubts about Zamicks arm were soon dispelled, the little man was once
again flying. They seemed all set, then games were lost by the odd goal, chances were
missed, in other words the team had not "clicked". Stinchcombe moved the team
around. Practices were frequent and rugged. Results were still not what they should have
been. The first inkling of things being "a bit wrong" came when Pat Casey asked
to be moved off the No.1 line. This looked crazy, the Strongman - Zamick - Casey line was
reckoned to be the best in the league, so why break it up?
On defence Smith was playing
great hockey, but Finch was getting slap-happy cover. Keith Peters couldnt get
going. With the team playing under a strain it was inevitable that something would happen.
The chopper fell on Keith Peters.
Going well in the National League the team started to
sag in the middle. Trips abroad were blamed. In my opinion thats all hooey. The
fight was missing. Les Strongman skated himself into the ice in an effort to keep the team
on top. Smith was a certain all All Star on defence. Zamick was still getting the goals.
Yet the team lost games that should have been won. The crux of the matter? If you do not
play as a club and have that fighting spirit, you dont win. (John Lawson, Ice Hockey
World 53/54)
Once again Zamick finished at the head of the point scoring charts on 131.
with Joe Shack of Harringay on 113 and Stu Robertson of Streatham 3rd on 111.
