Any observers keenly interested in ice hockey as a sport are concerned with the decision of the big stadiums - Harringay, Wembley and the Empress Hall - to turn ice hockey on and off like a tap. They fear the public won't take well to the stop and start type of promotion, planned for this season. Ice hockey has such a long way to go before the National Press will accept it as a game that the decision of the big rinks to side-track hockey for 2 and a half months at Christmas to stage a Circus and two ice skating pantomimes is going to make this acceptance all the more difficult.
Archie Stinchcombe's Nottingham Panthers made a fine impression on their first ever overseas tour when they visited Sweden at the turn of the year. They played four games, defeating Djurgarden 5-4, Soedertaelje 5-3 and the Swedish National team 5-1 (!!!!!!!!!). In a return against the National side they lost 7-3.
Chick Zamick once again scored ten hat-tricks during the season, a feat he had accomplished in 47/48. He finished 2nd in the scoring charts on 148, four points behind George Beach of the Wembley Monarchs with Jean-Paul Lafortune also of the Monarchs 3rd on 126.
Panthers pipped Earl's Court Rangers on goal average for the "Sussex Daily News" Cup, the final tournament of the English season. Streatham and Nottingham were invited to join the tournament in order to fill vacant dates until the majority of players left for Canada. The issue was in doubt until the very last game, but a fine 10-3 win by the Rangers over Streatham couldn't win the trophy, as Panthers had beaten Tigers 12-1 the previous night.
