Nottingham was first introduced to ice hockey in 1939 - or rather would
have been but for a certain German Chancellor. A team was brought over but promptly sent home
without playing a match. They tried again at the start of 46/47 season with rather more
success. Coach Sandy Archer, star of the pre-war Wembley Lions, brought over a team of 12
players, two of whom - winger Les Strongman and defenceman Ken Westman, were to play a big
part in making Panthers a household name for years to come.
On November 22nd the first ever Panthers game saw a 2,700 crowd, paying
between 3/6 (17.5p) & 10/6 (52.5p), witness a 3-2 success over the Wembley Monarchs,
with George Stevens netting a brace. That early success though couldn't stop Panthers
collecting the ENL wooden spoon. Goalie Jack Warwick suffered an early season ending
injury and he was replaced by Dick Halverson who had been released by Wembley Monarchs. |
