- 1939 1st
Dec. Death of George Ernest PRATLEY, Marion's grandfather.
- Also
start
of Second World War. Many old buildings in Gosport were destroyed by
the bombing, including the Congregational Church on the site of
the
present Post Office in the High Street. Ann's Hill railway bridge was
also bombed. It is likely that nearby in Brougham Street, house no. 7a
was demolished at that time.
Stoke Road Shops
originally known as 'Gambier Place'
Victorian houses circa 1817, converted into shops.
Old family dairy shop on right
This row of shops was
originally called 'Gambier Place.' This was probably named
after a naval commander at the time - Admiral Lord
James Gambia or Gambier Admiral of the Blue. One of the vessels
involved in a battle at Basque Roads
in 1809, where Gambier was in command, was a naval transport
vessel called, 'Cleveland.' Interesting
to note that just off Stoke Road there is a, Cleveland Road. Interesting how road
names reflect the history of the time and help date their construction.
