The DORSET connection....

  • 1801 ......14.11.1801 Birth of Robert Richard STODDARD (Gt Gt Grandfather?) Melcombe Regis, Weymouth, Dorset (to be confirmed) Dorchester Record Office. Wife Fanny, nee? Children: John + 18/08/1836. 2. Mary Anne Stoddart b. 27.05.1838
  • 1805 Battle of Trafalgar - the Roll of sailors in the English fleet. There was a John STODDART there on the Agamemnon, described as, "a boy."
  • 1805 Production of wool reaches a record £18.5m.
  • 1809 Was this the year that Gambier Place, the terrace houses' in Stoke Road, Gosport, were built?
  • 1810 Construction of the 86 mile long Kennet & Avon Canal is completed.
  • 1811 Born this year, Robert Stoddard and future wife Fanny? Date: 3 Feb 1811 Name: Ann Stoddard Event: Sturminster Newton Christening (view IGI page) Father: William Stoddard  Mother: Mary
  • 1815 Passing of the Corn Laws for land owners wanting to impose duty on imported wheat to keep domestic price high, making bread expensive.
  • 1819 Queen Victoria is born.
  • 1822 Birth of Gt Grandfather William DORE 17/11/1822
  • 1830 Farm workers riot over southern England ("Swing Riots". They are protesting about poor wages and unemployment caused by mechanisation on the farms.
  • Foundation of anti corn laws league.
  • 1833 Birth of Gt Grandmother Amelia SUTER 14/03/1833
  • 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act is major legislation concerned with Workhouses
  • 1835 Birth of Jane YEATMAN (Gt. Grandmother) at Hazelbury Bryan, Dorset
  • 1836 - 14 Aug 1836 Birth of John Stoddard + (Gt. Grandfather) at Sturminster Newton, Dorset. In this year a new railway bridge is opened at Ann's Hill, Gosport.
  • 1837 Victoria is crowned Queen of Great Britain. It is likely that Victoria Place, Gosport, was built at this time.

  • 1837 - New 'Civil Registration' requirements begin on 1st July. Here is an early example:
  • 1837 - 27 Nov 1837 Death of John STODDARD, a Weaver, age 85, from "palsy", Death registered By Anne Harvey, "The Daughter", at Sturminster Newton, Dorset. Cert. Yes. Birth this year, John Stoddard, Gt Grandfather.

Into HAMPSHIRE , England - the hunt continues...

  • 1839 Hampshire Constabulary formed and electric telegraph developed.
  • 1840 Electric light bulb invented
  • 1841 Census, Church Street, Sturminster Newton. Robert Stoddard age age 30, wife Fanny age 30, son John 4, Mary Ann age 3. This year Gosport railway opens and closes four days later due to a landslip at Fareham. Re-opens in 1842..
  • 1844 Prince Alfred, Queen Victoria's second child is born. It is likely that Prince Alfred Street, Gosport, was built at this time.
  • 1845 In the Arctic Sir John Franklin's expedition to find the North West Passage is trapped in the ice on the Terror, off King William Island, with a loss of 128 crew, including Franklin. Arctic Exploration will feature in our story.
  • 1845 Birth of Alfred D. MAY, Marion's Gt. Grandfather.
  • 1846 Repel of Corn Laws
  • 1841 Death of William Stoddard Gt.Gt.Gt. Granfather in June. 
  • 1848 Death of his wife, Mary Stoddard in March.
  • 1850s Time of the American Civil War
  • 1851 The population of England is now 16.9 million, says the latest Census:

  • 1855 Ann's Hill Cemetery, Gosport, opens for business.
  • Abt 1856  John STODDARD is employed as a Dockyard police constable in Gosport. The history of this force starts in the 17th century and you can read about it here
  • 1856 The Arctic Polar Medal is first issued: "The Polar Medal, dating back to 1857, was founded as an Arctic Medal to honour explorers who had died discovering the North West Passage in the Arctic. Following the exploration of the Antarctic in the early 1900s the medal became known as the Polar Medal. Famous recipients of the medal have included great explorers such as Scott and Shackleton, and more recently Fuchs and Hilary. These days the medal is awarded in recognition for individual distinction in polar exploration." Which of our Dore ancestors received this medal?
  • 1857 Marriage on 4th April, Gt Grandfather William DORE and Amelia SUTER at Kingston Church, Portsmouth. In this same year the first medal for British Arctic exploration was instituted covering the period from 1818 to 1855. Some 2500 men were eligible for it - but only about 1500 received it. Which member of the Dore family was the recipient of such a medal? Was it William Dore?
  • 1857 Also this year, the railway line from The Templecombe to Blandford, part of the Dorset Central Railway opens. The Blandford to Wimborne section opened the previous year. Since 1847 you could travel from Wimborne to Southampton via West Moors and Brockenhurst. This is how Gt. Grandfather, John, was able to travel easily to Gosport and back for his wedding in 1861.   • 1858 Birth of William James DORE at Moricetown, Plymouth, Devon.
  • 1860 John STODDARD is now employed as a Metropolitan Dockyard Police Constable at Gosport. Warrant number 39425. living at Victoria Place, Gosport. Street is still there but houses 9 & 10 demolished for South Relief Road in 1970s. Sadly a search of the old personnel records held at the Public Record Office, Kew - now the National Archive, reveals that three early record books were destroyed , including the one that covers this period.

  • 1863 Birth of Amelia Jane DORE 27 Victoria Terrace, Lake, Landport, Portsmouth.
  • 1865 John Stoddard is now Constable 2nd Class.
  • 1865 Birth of Caroline Susannah DORE at 5 Victoria Terrace, Dovercourt, Essex.
  • 1867 - Feb 1867 Birth of Fanny Jane Stoddard, daughter of John & Jane at 9 Victoria Place.
  • 1867 - 29 Jul 1867 Burial of Fanny Jane STODDARD at Ann's Hill Cemetery died 4 months old of dysentery on 25/07/1867 Address 9 Victoria Place. Cert.- yes. location - 10 Victoria Place. Also this year the last public hanging at Winchester took place.
  • 1868 - Oct 1868 John Stoddard is promoted Constable 1st Class.
  • 1869 - 7 Feb 1869 Birth -  John STODDARD (Grandfather) at 9 Victoria Place, Gosport. Sept. death of Fanny Stoddard at Sturminster. Did she ever see her grandson?
  • 1870 Education for children is made compulsory
  • 1871 Birth & Census year  Frederick William STODDARD, son of John & Jane STODDARD at 10 Victoria Place, Alverstoke, Gosport. see ++ below. John snr. is Police Constable HM Dockyard. Also this year, birth of Eleanor Louisa DORE at 60 Magdalla Terrace, Fratton, Portsmouth.
  • 1873 19th Jan. Birth of Emma  HILLERY at Titchfield (Grandmother, cert - yes). Address: Court Barn, Titchfield, Hants. Mother's maiden name, Sarah SAVAGE (no cert.) Father was George HILLERY, Ag. Lab. (no cert.) Birth of Rose Maud DORE at 60 Magdalla Terrace, Fratton.

  • 1875 Birth of Annie Jane STODDARD, daughter of John & Jane. (cert. yes) Address was, 6 Charley Street, Clayhall, Alverstoke. Also birth of John Henry DORE - (maternal) grandfather.
  • 1875 Birth (18/11/1875) of John Henry DORE - Grandfather. Also this year birth of George Ernest PRATLEY, known as Joseph George Ernest PRATLEY. On 4th Aug. at Mayfair, London.
  • 1877 - 22 Jan 1877 At age 40, John STODDARD, is medically retired due to heart disease. Becomes a "Cow Keeper & Dealer" at Gosport. New address: 2 Prince Alfred Street. Gosport  (House has been demolished for South Relief Road in 1970s).
  • 1878 Birth of George MAY, Marion's Grandfather.

  • 1897 - 7 Jan 1897 Burial of Annie Jane STODDARD, daughter of John & Jane, at Ann's Hill. Place of death was 5 Prince Alfred St. on 02/01/1897 (house is still there) Aged 22, "A Spinster." Cause; 'Pneumonia'
  • 1897 27th Sept. Marriage of John STODDARD, 28, bachelor, dairyman, and Emily (or Emma) HILLARY, spinster, 24, from Titchfield. Address; 5 Sunnyside, (nr. Brougham Street) Ann's Hill, Gosport, at St. John's church. They then lived at the dairy/shop, 193 Stoke Road. Father; George HILLARY, a labourer. Witnesses; Annie and Frederick HILLARY.
  • 1898 - 22 June Burial of John STODDARD, son of John and Emily. Home was 193 Stoke Road, Gosport. Died 2 days old.
