The
Hip
- The Great New Way To
Carry Children
The story behind "The Hip"
Being
a new father is a great joy but one feature of our anatomy lets us down
badly. We havent got any hips. The constant hitching up and re-adjustments
all ending in ultimate failure. After about nine months of this, I was
walking down to the pub one early summer evening. I had with me my old
SLR camera, the strap slung across one shoulder and its bulky form resting
high to the side on my hip. This time when I picked Richard up he came
to rest on the camera. So this was what it was like to have a real hip.
Why dont I make one for myself to compensate for this careless
evolutionary oversight? The
very next day I rigged up an old bicycle saddle with the a luggage strap
and a piece of scrap aluminium as a backplate.
This was very promising and I decided to set about making it into a
product. It has changed from being a real bicycle saddle, through fibreglass
and other prototypes, like the one shown here with Betty aged 2 years
4 months, to a surprisingly light but very strong cellular foam platform.
I hope you get as much pleasure from using "The Hip" as I
did.
