Business English

The English Tutorial Centre Oxford has specialised in Business English courses, and with it’s sister companies Europalink and Business Mentors Ltd can offer unique learning modules for managers, executives and administrative front line staff to companies wishing to take advantage of tuition of the highest calibre.

Text book material is supplemented by study of economic and political articles from the quality press, e.g. The Times, The Financial Times, The Economist, and by videos with similar themes. Lectures on aspects of the current UK economy can be arranged, and participants will have the opportunity to meet their British professional counterparts.

The linguistic entry levels for each course are meant to serve as a broad guide only.  Applicants will be asked to complete our Diagnostic Test, and submit an audio tape of themselves using English. This will enable individual assessments to be made.

The Chancellor Module:
Designed specifically for senior executives - to broaden comprehension, expression and word power, together with correction and improvement of diction.

Linguistic Entry Level: Lower Advanced

Delegate Cost Per week: £1,300

Curriculum: Work will be organised around realistic case studies, which will offer integrated management and language tasks. Delegates will apply themselves to improving their knowledge of syntax, idiom and vocabulary, as well as their listening comprehension and note-taking skills.

The Provost Module:
Geared to middle and line managers - to increase vocabulary, improve diction and conversational skills, in addition to creating greater awareness of commercial and business phraseology and terminology.

Linguistic Entry Level: Intermediate

Delegate Cost per week: £1,100
Plus costs of either Hotel or Host Family Accommodation.

Curriculum: This linguistic input will be larger on this course. More direct emphasis will be placed on building up of reading, writing, listening and oral skills; on the structure of English: i.e. the grammar, syntax and idiom. But the material used and the vocabulary / idioms presented will be orientated towards the business world.

Overall, The Chancellor and The Provost modules have a great deal in common, however The Provost module is less exacting, as the linguistic entry qualification is lower.

The Graces Module:
For the development of communication skills of senior secretaries, personal assistants, marketing and sales staff. This module is also useful for those whose general standard of English is above this level, but who wish to strengthen their grasp of the specific skills upon which it focuses.

Linguistic Entry Level: Middle / Lower Middle Intermediate

Curriculum: Much of this course is concerned with building up the student's vocabulary idiom: the skills of reading, listening, writing and speaking. But the slant, as always, is to the business and office situations. Especial concentration is given to telephone answering techniques, note-taking from telephone conversations and from video, memoranda and letter writing, basic report writing, and on the ability to summarise the main points of lengthy, but fairly straightforward written and dictated passages. Examples of multi-purpose business letters are available for participants to examine and review.
We can offer favourable terms to family members, or partners, who accompany delegates, but who do not wish to participate in tuition.

We will be pleased to suggest itineraries, make the necessary bookings, and other arrangements, to ensure that our clients obtain the greatest possible value from their time spent in Oxford.

The Chancellor, The Provost and The Graces modules can all be easily tailored to small groups - provided the linguistic level of all participants is of a similar level. Should company be interested in having these modules delivered at either a conference location in the UK or within Europe, we would be happy to discuss the necessary arrangements and provide a quotation accordingly.

Work Placement
Individual tuition in English can be combined with work placement or shadowing in a company around Oxford, broadly similar to the participant’s own. But this stage cannot take place concurrently with the classes - it would have to either precede or follow them.

Special assignments:
Assistance is available, using experienced business managers, for the preparation of sales and technical presentations, speeches or special projects.
Such professional preparation will boost the confidence of the presenter or speaker, which can only improve delivery and effect substantially. Preparation sessions can be arranged at any location, i.e. in-house, at conference / seminar venue, or in Oxford etc.

Translation, Secretarial / Administrative Support
Facilities are also available for translation of speeches, presentations or lectures into any language. Secretarial or administrative support can be arranged to enable executives to concentrate on their specialist activities.

Courses other than Business English:
We also offer individual and paired tuition in English language and civilisation.  These courses may be undertaken either for general purposes, or directed towards specific academic examinations.  Please refer to "Courses" and "Examinations".

Holiday, Travel and Other Leisure Activities:
For the visitor, Oxford provides a wealth of architectural, historic and cultural interest.  The city is also geographically well positioned and enjoys excellent communication links for excursions to London, Windsor, Stratford-on-Avon, Bath, Bristol etc.
