TON PENTRE WI
meet at the Junior School,
on the second Thursday of the month, at 6.30pm
Due to the determination
of Mrs Gwyneth Jarman, who fought to have a rural organisation
in a mining village, this was the first WI in Glamorgan to form
in a non-rural area. They have maintained their numbers (85 members)
in this active and caring Institute since formation in 1949.
They have a Choir,
a Craft section, a Drama
Group and
also enjoy keep-fit, bowls and darts.
The Banner
was made in 1984 by Mrs Phyllis Rees.
It depicts a
miner's lamp on a coal-tip. The fabrics are hessian and velvet,
symbolising the contrast in life-styles of the miner and coal
owner, and green felt representing the reclamation of the valleys
after the closure of the pits. The oak-leaves and acorns indicate
the rural valley before the discovery of coal. Some of the
oak-trees from this valley were used to build the ships that fought
the Spanish Armada.
