This is where I learned my craft - playing 12-string acoustic guitar solo around the folk clubs. But, I always imagined the music in a bigger setting, with other instruments - which I was able to attempt by multitracking in a recording studio.
My first album (A Rash Adventure) came out on LP in 1984. On reflection, while I think the compositions were generally energetic and exciting, much of the playing and production were rather naïve. I am often tempted to re-record the pieces, in the light of considerably more experience and using better studio techniques - if only for my own benefit.
Nevertheless, the Adventure was generally well received by most of my audiences. So, I embarked on my second album (True, Dare, Kiss or Promise) in 1986. This time, I had the benefit of Keith Slater (then in Fastest Bat) on drums, which provided a better framework to lock the other instruments in to. Consequently, I think these recordings have aged better (though I still might like to have another go at them one day.
The end of this period for me was marked by contributing a track (the last magician) to the 'Mastercraftsmen' album, which featured various legendary musicians playing instruments made by master-luthier Rob Armstrong. I believe this CD is like hen's teeth to find now, so I have made my track available here.
However, while I have been exploring other musical styles over the past 20 years - as documented on the other pages, I am still known to play the occasional acoustic 12-string solo gig..... anyone interested?
