International Observer Live At The Brixton Jamm

On the 16th November 2005 Tom bailey played a small gig at the Brixton Jamm London. It was only his second gig as International Observer in the city. His previous one being a the Fabric club in 2002. Here is some pics of that night. I attended the gig with some friends and fellow fans from Big Trash. There with me where Tihoni, Rob, Geoff Big Trash members Geoff's friend Marc. Tihoni had come along way to see Tom play live since he lives in Croatia but we figured this may be a once in a lifetime chance. We had a feeling that Alannah would maybe be there at some point so we figured that it was worth the effort. I had never seen the Thompson Twins play live something I regret so this would be something to look forward too. I must add that I only discovered this gig was taking place on the Saturday when I was contacted by Eoin through this site. So its thanks to her that I got the news in time and was able to pass it onto Big Trash.

When we arrived at the Brixton Jamm I spotted Tom at the bar talking. He recognized Geoff and came over to speak to us for a few minutes. Tom was good enough to sign me and Tihoni's All Played Out cd and he seemed genuinely surprised and pleased that we both had copies. Tom and Alannah's son Jackson was also there since he is one of the resident Djs of the club. Tom played all off his second International Observer cd "All Played Out" plus a new track that sounded excellent. The music was quite like it it on cd but with maybe a few more effects and vocal sounds thrown in. This was  no more apparent than on Cellphone Dub one of my favorite tracks from that album. During the show Alannah arrived at the bar to watch and after some of the others getting to talk to her she was kind enough to pose for photos with us all. Alannah told us that at the moment she is finished with music altogether.

After the show which Tom and Alannah posed for pics with us once again. Then Tom talked to us for about 20 or 30mins. He told us that Babble's The Stone was the Highlight of his career. He also mentioned that there was half of a third Babble album finished but its release was scrapped due to problems with the label. So since the record company own the rights to these tracks its up to them whether or not these ever see the light of day.

Tom noticed my feedback max t-shirt which can be seen in some of these pictures which was my homemade attempt to recreate the shirt he wore in the Babble video for Take Me Away. He told us an interesting story behind its logo and the name feedback max.  He told us that someone either the manager or someone from the record label called to ask if he had come up with a name for the band yet. He hadn't been able to think of anything yet when looking at this amplifier in the room with all the knobs he spotted one for feedback marked with Max and Min settings and it was then the idea struck him "feedback max" and immediately told the guy. So the picture you are seeing is actually a representation of that control knob. Talking about more recent projects Tom told us that the soundtrack to Holiwater is finished but at that time there was still work to be done on the film. I cant wait to hear it. He also says that he would like to bring his live performance of this project to the UK.

During the course of the night we took pictures and Rob and I filmed on our cameras. At times I felt a little awkward filming as I didn't want to be too intrusive. We where all a bit star struck that night and if you had told me I would be meeting Tom and Alannah in person I would have never believed it. This was something I had thought about many times over the years and maybe dreamed of what it would be like. I am just as interested in the music that Tom is making now if not more so. And in meeting them its just nice for them to know that you are out there and still support what they do that they know of your existence.  We all found both Tom and Alannah to be very nice and they where generous with their time. So if they are ever reading this I'd like to thank them for that. It was a night we will never forget.

Peter.
