Cadaver Tombs

Westminster Abbey, London.

Monument by L.F.Roubiliac, erected in 1761.

This large monument is to Lady Elizabeth Nightingale who, whilst awaiting the birth of their child, was strolling on the terrace of their house at Mamhead Devon with her Husband in 1731 when she was struck by lightening and her husband was unable to save her. This monument shows them in front of a large window with Death preparing to strike with his dart.

It is said that John Wesley said that it is one of only two monuments in Westminster Abbey worthy of the attention of a christian.
