Cadaver Tombs

St. Pauls Cathedral, London.

The only sculpted effigy to survive the great Fire of London in Old St Paul's. Effigy of John Donne Poet, Preacher and Dean of St Paul's Cathedral, London, from 1621 to 1634 and sculpted by Nicholas Stone.

Born 1573 Died 1634(?), it shows him rising out of an urn, well wrapped up in his shroud, with just his mustachioed and bearded face showing. In 1601 whilst secretary to Sir Thomas Egerton he secretly married his employer's daughter, for which his employer had him imprisoned. It is said that on his cell wall he had scratched : John Donne- Ann Donne- Undone! It is said that he was quite a wag!!
