Cadaver Tombs

Church of All Saints, East Barsham, Norfolk.

Photograph: Peter Fairweather. 8-Aug-1987

In this Picture, the cadaver shown is not the emaciated corpse of the 15th Century figure but is a lady who is rising out of her coffin all fresh and ready for the life hereafter. This represents Mrs Calthorpe rising from her coffin at the sound of the last trump blown by the angel in the alcove above her.

Mrs Calthorpe died in 1640 and her large hanging wall monument was carved and signed by John and Matthias Christmas.
