WALK 5 EGTON BRIDGE TO CASTLETON via Lealholm side & Danby Beacon

Leave the station and at the bottom of the steps you will see on your left a wooden walkway sign pointing along a farm road towards a farm through a wooden gate. Go through the gate and after about 100 yards on your right you will see another wooden sign pointing uphill over stone slabs set in the grass.

Go uphill to a gate at the top of the field and once through carry on uphill bearing slightly left and following more stone slabs set in the ground until you reach another gate into a field. Through the gate bear slightly right and keeping the hedge always on your right  follow more stone slabs through more gates until you reach a stile from a field on to a metalled road.

On the metalled road turn left along it until you reach a  track to the right of a  church which must be followed with the perimeter of the church yard  on your left to a gate on your right. Go through the gate and keep to the top of the field but going slightly down hill until you reach another wooden way sign pointing left and down hill. Take that direction going  slightly back on yourself where at the bottom you come to a little bridge over a stream with a gate either side of the bridge. Cross the bridge and turn right continuing up hill with the stream on your right until you see a fence with a gate which once through brings you into a field.

Turn right and keeping the fence on your right until you reach a set of fence posts where you turn left following slabs set into the grass to a stile on your right where you cross into a field to another stile into a field above a farm. Go towards the farm and through the farmyard keeping the farm house on your right and on to the farm access road which brings you to a main road. Turn left on the main road for about 70 yards and then take a right along another farm road to another farm where you go through a gate   past a cow shed on the right and through a gate at the end of the cow shed into a field.

At 10 o'clock from you is a gate out of the field  so go through the gate and continue down hill to a gate through a fence.Through the gate and again straight down hill until you reach a bridge over a stream which on the other side leads into a field. Go up the field through a couple of gates until you reach a house where you turn left along the access road sharply up hill at first then levelling off for about a mile past some holiday cottages.

Just past these cottages is a cattle grid and 20 yards beyond this you must leave the road  at a bend leading down towards a row of houses (Lealholm side) From the bend just a few degrees right of straight on you must go over open land for about half a mile until you reach the main road down into Lealholm. Turn right on the main road and go up hill until you reach a junction on the left at which point you follow the sign across the moor half way between the two roads. After about a mile over the moor in a straight line you reach a track on which you turn left for about a mile and a half to Danby beacon.

The beacon is no longer there as it was vandalised soon after being used for the millenium celebrations but the area is marked by a trig point and a short column with a plan depicting the various sights and views.

It is at this point that the track becomes a metalled road where you take the left fork going down hill for a mile passing a junction on the left  and then where the road bends left you go right following the wall on the left. Where the wall goes left after joining a farm track you cross the track going straight on over the moor until you reach after about 200 yards another wall which you again keep on you left. Again where the wall bears left you go straight on until you reach a farm track which you follow down hill until you come to a main road after about 100 yards.

On the main road you turn right up hill for a few yards until you reach an access road bearing off to the left with the sign 'Rosedale Intake.' Follow this until you reach a farm house with an arrow pointing straight on along the track ignoring this proceed down to a gate on the left just beyond the buildings. Through the gate and straight down hill to another gate through and down over a small bridge and on to some stepping stones over a stream. On the other side climb steadily until you reach a fence which you should keep on your left until you come to a gate. Go through the gate and turn left  across the moor for about 100 yards to reach another gate set back between two stone walls. Through that one and continue between the walls to another gate which bring you to a small gate out on to the moors. Once through go in a direction of 2 o'clock from you across the moor and slightly down hill until you see a gate over on the right at the edge of a wood (Park Wood). Go through and straight on following a well defined path through 2 gates until you reach some buildings on your left  and once past them go sharply down hill on your left where you will reach the railway station at Castleton with the Eskdale Inn just through the bridge.
