Title holder Ashley Willetts (Portchester Community School) dominated the Under 16 Boys competition. Fresh from special coaching in China and Sweden, Willetts has emerged a top local league player. His powerful attack, deceptive spin services and tactical play proved too good in the final when he beat school colleague Sam Moon who himself has improved greatly.
In one semi final the fast attack of William George (ALNS) put Willetts under some pressure but he powered his way into the final with spare capacity.
In the other semi final Sam Moon defeated Connor Shipp (Mayfield) in four games. Each player sought to attack the occasional loose ball and on this occasional Moon was a clear winner.
The Under 16 Girls competition was won by Davina Roberts (ALNS) who won all her group matches and defeated Heather Knight (Portchester Community School) into second place in a tight match.
The Under 14 Boys final was an epic event with Josh Colombi (St Edmonds) winning in the 5th game against Dan Clasby (ALNS) Both boys played to a high standard mixing defence and attacking play. Tom Clark (Priory) and Joshua Franklin (Mayfield) were the losing semi finalists both playing to a high standard.
In the Under 14 Girls competition players from King Richard School dominated the group matches with Becky Lashley powering her way to the title and her school friend Rachael Foster gaining second place.
Keiren Wells (Portchester Community School) showed great promise as a potential top player to win the Under 12 Boys event against fast improving William Owen (ALNS). In a hard fought final Keiren won in straight games. Other boys who played well included twins Joe and Luke Austen: Jack Elverson, Stefan Clark and Liam Branch (King Richard School), Chris Speirs ( Medina ) and Charlie Anderson (Portchester Community School).
In the Under 12 Girls competition young Faye Roberts (sister of the Under 16 Champion Davina) from Westover School proved too strong for Joanna Fan (ALNS) who showed a good sporting spirit.
Championship organiser Brian Hall said he was delighted with the record player entry and impressed to see the improving standard of so many young players. He expressed appreciation to the City's Leisure Service for its support of the event and the sports development initiatives it was undertaking in table tennis
