OPENING of WINCHESTER BUS STATION 20th JUNE 1935

HANTS & DORSET MOTOR SERVICES Ltd

New ‘bus station opened at Winchester

The new Hants & Dorset ‘Bus Station which has been in process of construction in the Broadway for some months past has now been completed and was, on Thursday, opened with due ceremony to traffic. The station consists of a large garage at the rear, which can hold 20 ‘buses, a large open space giving plenty of room for turning, with platforms on either side for mounting or descending from the ‘buses, waiting rooms for passengers and for the staff, parcels and other offices and an entrance with a large fascia which has generally been acclaimed as an improvement in the appearance of the street.  Since some 150 ‘buses will use the station each day, special arrangements have been made for the drivers and conductors, who are provided with a first class permanent recreation room with a billiard table and provision for other games. The station, which was built  to the plans of Mr. Geoffrey Denham FIAA, of Winchester with Messrs H.G.Ross and Sons as the contractors, is of steel construction.  It is equipped with a glazed inspection pit, ample accommodation for fuel, electric lighting and gas heating.

A number of Aldermen, Councillors, City Officials and Directors and Officials of the Company were present at the station on Thursday morning in drizzling rain for the opening ceremony. The Mayor of Winchester performed the ceremony by cutting the ribbon stretched across the entrance, with a pair of gold scissors presented to him in honour of the occasion. The scissors, which were adorned with a miniature of a Hants and Dorset ‘bus in enamel, were a gift to the Mayor from the Architect (Mr. G. Denham). The Mayor’s car, with the Mayoress, Mrs Burbridge and Miss Hodder, drove through, followed by a Hants and Dorset ‘bus and a new Tourist coach.  A large number of spectators followed the ‘bus and coach into the station and took the opportunity of inspecting the new buildings.                                                                           CLICK HERE FOR NEXT PAGE
