Academia In 1996 I completed my doctoral thesis on the electrical behaviour of brownmillerite-structured oxide ceramics at Oxford University in the Department of Materials. While at Oxford, I was a resident of Merton College, founded in 1264.

My first degree was in ceramic engineering in the School of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia, where my honours project was on high-temperature superconductors.

After completing my undergraduate degree, I spent six months in the Materials Division of the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) at Lucas heights, Australia. I was able to travel abroad to pursue my doctorate thanks to the Royal Society, who awarded me a Rutherford Scholarship in 1992.
