This mat is specially designed to go under a plant pot.

poinsettia The majority of the work is in the outside rows where it will show.

I have written out the pattern below in conventional rounds. If you are a more experienced tatter you will know how to work the first five rounds continuously by using split rings and bridged chains.

Mat detail

Materials
Wind a shuttle full from a ball of Coats mercerised Cotton #20 or similar. Do not cut.
The mat can be made using just one 20 gm ball of this thread but there is not much margin for error.

This gap allows the pattern to be printed nicely on two pages.
For best results use the black cartridge on your printer.

The numbers denote the number of double stitches to make.

The pattern is written out in a simpified way just to make counting the stitches easier. Look at the illustrations to see where the joins are made.

Centre ROUND ONE R 3-3-3-3 close, RW, Ch 6-6-6-6-6, [RW, R 3+3-3-3, Ch 6+6-6-6-6, RW] seven times, R 3+3-3+3 close, RW, Ch 6+6-6-6+6,

ROUND TWO [R 3-3+3-3 close, RW, Ch 9-9, RW,] eighteen times

ROUND THREE...NB...The first two rings make an increase by joining to the same picot on round two.[R3-3+6, RW, Ch 9-9, RW, R 6+3-3 close, RW, Ch 9-9, (R 3-3+3-3 close, RW, Ch 9-9, RW,) five times)]three times.

ROUND FOUR [R 3-3+3-3 close, RW, Ch 9-9, RW,] twenty one times.

ROUND FIVE [R 3-3+3-3 close, RW, Ch 6-9-6, RW,] twenty one times.

ROUND SIX [R 3-3-3-3 close, RW, Ch 6, RW, R 3+3-3-3 close, RW, Ch 9+9+9, RW,] twenty-one times.

ROUND SEVEN [(R 3+3-3-3, RW, Ch 3-3, RW,) three times, (LJ, Ch 3-3,) two times] twenty one times.

ROUND EIGHT...Two shuttles...Sh1 and Sh2 both wound full with no break between. Sh1 [R3-3-3-3 close, RW, Ch 3+3 (joining to the picot on the chain between two LJ on previous round,RW, R 3+3-3-3 close, RW, Ch 6, Sh2 R 3+6+3-3-3-3-3 close, Sh1 Ch 6, RW, R 6+6 close, R 3-3-3-3 close, RW, Ch 6-3, RW, R3-3+3--3--3--3--3-3 close, R3+3--3--3--3--3--3-3, R3+3--3--3--3--3-3-3 close, RW, Ch 3+6, RW, R 3-3+3-3 close, R 6-6 close, RW, Ch 6+6, RW.] twenty one times.
