Map of Fforest Fawr

Fforest Fawr is an area of woodland managed by Forest Enterprise, on the Tongwynlais Caerphilly border (the woods behind Castell Coch).

Much work has been done to raise money for surfacing. Julia Pearce of JMP Saddlery (a local business) sponsored the opening in June 2000.

As recently reported in the News section, SAFE have received a £4,438 grant from Biffawards Small Grants Scheme. This has paid to finish off surfacing work in Fforest Fawr and Fforest Ganol plus improved access points and waymarking.

SAFE are very grateful to Biffa for funding the work, which has much improved access. Some recent photos of this work are below.

More surfacing on the route was completed in Autumn 2003 and this is a big improvement. Attempts to organise a smooth flow of volunteers, to help with the raking of scalpings, were severely hampered by the tempramental machinery which kept breaking down, and the fact that the work had to be done during the week. Joy would like to thank all of you that turned up to help (which makes a change as she usually forgets to thank me for anything - Andrew the webmaster). Some answered the call at very short notice and a couple from outside the area generously gave their time - given that they will not directly benefit from the work.

The work was funded by SAFE and grants and, in addition, we also have to thank the BHS who paid £100 for materials.

Work is still continuing on surfacing the 3 mile route. Many thanks to RMC Aggregates for their generous donation of nearly 60 tons of limestone scalpings.
