1888 Kampfe Bros. Star model 1 USA New York Pioneer safety razor with non-disposable (resharpenable) blades, half-way stage in development of the razor between open/cut-throat and Gillette. Nickel-plated brass shaving head, extremely ornate with lists of patents etched on the back.
c1900 Kram Germany Example of early cut-throat with hollow ground steel blade and ivory handle. Packaged in slim dark grey box. Handles also made from bone and, later, phenol plastic.
1904 Gillette USA Early Gillette three-part safety razor using pioneering system of disposable blades (patented by Gillette in 1904). Silver-plated knurled removable handle, slim silver-plated snap case with floral decorative border.

Pushing spring loaded safety guard down loosens blade and allows it to be retracted, using remover. Razor has rubber handle at end, blade remover has matching one in wood. Patent number 20,687, 1908.
1916 Rolls Razor Imperial model 2 UK Cricklewood Popular, quality razor set: three-part case with strop and hone strips built into lids, hollow-ground blade (includes safety guard) on rack and separate handle. Blade sharpened by pulling backwards & forwards against strips inside case, then clipped to handle. Listed in Army & Navy 1926/27 at 30/- and Harrods 1926. Many editions: nickel-plated, stainless steel, silver and gold. Luxury travelling set at 63/-. Early packaging - red, black and blue carton, later blue snap case and carton. 1920 Gillette New Standard Canada Updated version of original Gillette safety razor with'fulcrum adjustment' blade angle adjuster/tensioner via rotating base of non-removable handle. Silver-plated handle and head, case covered in dark blue leather with padded top, lined with purple satin cloth. Silver-plated flip-top holder for ten blades.

1927 Wardonia New Edge UK Sheffield Updated version of older three-part Wardonia razor in cream urea plastic for removable handle and safety guard. Patent number 296,597 (applied for 1927).
c1928 Laurel UK Women's safety razor using Gillette system of disposable blades. Tiny size, about a third of full-size Gillette. Feature made of Bakelite (maroon phenol plastic) safety support for blade. Patented and a registered design, but dates and numbers not indicated. Elegant tin case design in green, purple and gold. Instructions printed on card inserts in both halves of the case.
1928 Maktor UK Sheffield Unusual three-part safety razor with triangular head and blades, giving three shaving surfaces. Removable alloy handle and brown phenol plastic safety head. Registered design number745,455 (applied for 1928).
1936 Valet Auto Strop UK Alternative system to Gillette method using disposable blades, Valet uses semi-disposable blades that can be re-sharpened in the blade holder by inserting leather strop; it is a combined safety razor and stropping machine. Presented in brown phenol plastic case with blade and strop holder. Patent date is 1936, though was available in mid-20s in the USA.
c1938 7 O' Clock UK Popular safety razor, 1930s to 1950s, in luxury travelling set comprising: razor in mottled brown phenol plastic case, soap stick and shaving brush in separate brown phenol plastic containers with chrome-plated screw-off tops and brown phenol plastic comb.
c1938 Souplex Nymph UK Morecambe Women's safety razor using Gillette system of disposable blades. Small size, about a half of full-size Gillette. Two-part case (sectioned for dismantled razor), removable handle, safety support and top in lime green urea plastic (also available in pink). Art Deco motif to convex lid. Packaging in white bearing 'Nymph' name. Larger Souplex women's razor sets from around the late-1930s also available.
1945 Souplex Double-Six UK Morecambe Three-part safety razor with handle and safety head in brown phenol plastic. Wartime utility version of pre-war razor in low-cost cardboard packaging.
c1948 Gillette UK London Late-1930s development of Gillete safety razor as one-piece unit. Base of handle unscrews to open blade-holding wings and adjust blade tension (as on 1920 New Standard model). Popular, standard model until development of disposable/cartridge razors in 1960s. Polished cast alloy. This version presented in steel snap-shut case, trimmed with red leatherette and red plush inside. Blue enamelled steel blade holder/disposer.
