First Pifco electric razor, re-named 'Popular' after introduction of more up-market Pifco model 1128 'Prince' c1955. Simple, cream urea plastic body and 2-part storage case, designed for wall mounting, later versions in soft tartan bag. Thin foil head with acrylic cover. Cream flex and plug. Illustrated on front of Pifco 'Razorlite' carton, 1952 (see bottom of this page); catalogued in Electrical Review, October 1953; registered design number 874,514 (1954).

Restyled 1940s Contour model, retaining triple-cutting head. Cream urea plastic body, cream accessories, chromium-plated alloy head block, swings out on copper leaf spring for cleaning cutting heads, tan/brown imitation leather snap-case. Cream plastic flex with integral plug, earlier versions are rubber.

First purpose-designed Remington women's razor (after original 1937 razor re-sold as women's model). Two-tone pale blue/lilac body, similar style to 1948 Remington Contour 6, but with softer curved body. Light blue rubber flex with Belden plug and connector. Black snap case with gold polka-dot pattern, gold foil edging and pink flock/material lining.

Philips Philishave model 7743

UK

Twin-head version of Philips model 7735 with slight styling changes. Cream urea plastic body, rare maroon version available. Moulded urea plastic Philips plug with integral 110/240v voltage selector. Snap-off access to cutters with separate chrome-plated steel cover. Known as the 'Jet' or 'Speedshaver' in some markets. All Philips razors developed from this model until 1966 when triple-cutter model launched. Packaged in oval zip-up PVC case. Tiny cream plastic cleaning brush. Used by Anthony Quinn in The Long Wait, 1954.

Remington Sixty model AO

New, sleek design replacing Remington Contour 6 with palm-grip and two long cutters (based on principle on 1937 model). Two-tone cream/ tortoiseshell-effect beige urea plastic body. Turnwheel-start induction motor. Packaged in brown snap-case with brown corduroy trim. Includes two instructions booklets - one for how to shave using an electric razor and the other for razor care and maintenance. Basis of all new models until 1959.

Rolls Razor Viceroy model V-Ten

New design replacing 1930s version, reflecting trend toward larger motor/body and multiple heads. Cutting head distinctively angled. Two-tone beige/coffee urea thermoset plastic body, matching plastic flex/plug, cable sheath and light socket convertor. Iconic 'The Whetter' motif moulded into red/gold slide switch and clear plastic head cover. Registered Design number 872764 1954. Heavy compared to contemporary Remington models. Company folded in early 1960s after investment in twin-tub washing machine failed to complete with Hoover.

Standard mid-1950s Sunbeam razor with much bigger cutting surface than 1937 model. Motor is mounted lengthways, driving single oscillating cutter via connecting rod. Foil head with flip open access for cleaning. Chrome-plated steel clip-on cover. Simple cream plastic body, in production until 1960s. Plain case with padded top, covered in black leatherette. Multi-volt version, XRC, included in first Consumer's Association test of electric razors in 1959. Used by James Stewart in Rear Window, 1954.

Lipstick-shaped and inspired women's razor with single Philips rotating cutting head, gld-effect metal base unscrews, enabling sheath cover to be removed, exposing motor and electrics. Fashion-orientated packaging and user instructions, maximum attempt to feminize the electric razor (by mid-c20th US tastes). Some versions include a perfume-impregnated pad to mask the odor of oil. Packaging proclaims 'Made in Holland, styled in Paris'.

Pifco Razorlite model 1649

First of a range of illuminated shaving mirrors: others, Shaverlite model 1648 and Mirrolite. White urea plastic mirror frame and body with two-pin razor socket and 15w pigmy lamp. Plastic-coated wire stand pulls out for free-standing or wall-hanging. Reasonably effective, though casts strong shadows across face. Based on an early 1930s idea, with the addition of a razor socket. Registered design number 1952.
