I have been an architectural engineer in the Oil & Gas industry since 1981, with sporadic forays back into onshore 'bricks and mortar', when the troughs occurred. Having always been attracted by large structures and cutting edge construction techniques, I have enjoyed being part of the offshore industry and assisting in its development.

My first experience of LQ design was actually much earlier than 1981, whilst I was working with WS Atkins. There, I was involved with the design of Brent A Living Quarters, at a time when everything was at R & D status. Walls of the LQ, for instance, were multi-material elements and 2'-6" (760mm) thick! There were few precedents or guidelines. The 'ESSO curve' was not even a twinkle during those early days.

All in all, it has been a fascinating experience to date. Whilst the emphasis has long since shifted away from North Sea development (ah, halcyon days), the shrinking of the UK O & G industry has led to 'multi-tasking'. This, in turn, has extended the boundaries of this once desk-bound wallah, to being a sometimes globe-trotting wallah. Sojourns in South Korea, China, Singapore and Azerbaijan have been both useful and edifying experiences.

In 1990, having been permanent staff for 7 years, as the senior architectural engineer at H&G (aka...), I set up a limited company (See logo above) and have been a contractor ever since.
