What is acupuncture?
Acupuncture is a system of medicine which takes a holistic approach to diagnosis and treatment. It restores and maintains health and can be used to preserve health as well as to treat illness. The insertion of small fine needles into specific points on the surface of the body stimulates the body to rebalance itself by activating our own recuperative and self-healing powers.
Acupuncture, which originated in China , is an ancient healing art developed over thousands of years. Over the centuries a vast amount of literature has been compiled on acupuncture and other aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine such as herbalism, diet and exercise.
Traditionally acupuncture is seen as redirecting the vital energy of the body - the Qi (pronounced chee) Disturbances in the flow of Qi generate illness.
Today the thorough documentation and steady development continues worldwide.
Already long established in China , Korea , Japan and other Far Eastern countries acupuncture is now increasingly recognised in the West as a safe and effective form of medicine which requires extensive and specialised training for its proper and effective practice.
Maureen practices an integrated style of acupuncture using both the Five Elements and Traditional Chinese Medicine approach.
The Five Element approach identifies and treats our underlying constitutional energy whereas TCM looks more at the signs and symptoms of the illness. The combination of the two allows the whole person, body mind and spirit to be treated.
