Student Questions & Founders Answers

Why, when we bow, do we press our hands together to get a diamond instead of a triangle?
To create four cardinal points each representing an element with ourselves in the centre. Reaching out toward each point. Looking in toward the centre seeing all that must be one. (Focus the four to create the one).

Why is a Katana curved?
The straight – bladed sword gave way to the curved, longer, and stronger blade with a single cutting edge as early as the eighth century. Over many years of battlefield experience it was proven that the curved sword was better suited to the needs of the Japanese swordsman. Through the use of the curved sword a horseman and armoured warrior was able to focus the forces of his stroke as he cut, slashed, and thrust against an armoured enemy. The curved sword was also less prone to damage or total breakage when used powerfully to cut and slash from horse back.

Why is the Katana held with the blade upward?
The proper way to wear a Katana at rest is to position it in its scabbard, cutting edge uppermost, at the left side. This method of wearing the Katana is important, as it conditions the techniques of its use. The Katana is also placed in such a way as not to be uncomfortable to the hipbone when the swordsman sits, stands, or walks for a lengthy period of time. A poorly positioned Katana could severely bruise the hipbone.
