Pattison College   Coventry
Senior School

Children enter the Senior school at 11 years of age.The maximum class size is 16 pupils, allowing for plenty of individual attention. Half of the class is made up from our existing pupils who are joined by pupils from schools throughout Coventry and Warwickshire.

The Senior school course is based on the National Curriculum, but not bound by it, and leads to Key Stage 3 SATs in year 9 and  G.C.S.E. examinations in the following nine subjects:

English Language, English Literature, Mathematics, 21st Century Science (2 G.C.S.E.s), French, History, Geography and I.C.T.
All senior pupils have supervised access to our new state of the art computer suite in lessons as well as at lunch time.

Homework is set regularly and is an important part of a pupil's education, developing the ability to study independently. A classroom is available during lunchtime and  after school  for quiet study. Examinations are set twice a year. Two reports and two parents` evenings are timetabled during the year, with an  additional parents` evening before the October half term.

Parents are always asked however not to wait for an official parents` evening if ever they have any concerns but know that they should contact the form teacher or Mrs McConnell sooner rather than later, so that a meeting can be arranged at a mutually convenient time.

Non examination subjects include Art up to year 9,  P.S.H.E., Citizenship, R.E., Careers and Singing. P.E. does not appear on the timetable in the senior school, as a large array of  dance classes, as well as aerobic classes, is availble to pupils. These are held during the lunch breaks, after school and on Saturday mornings. This individual approach takes account of pupils` interests and of course ability, ensuring that they are working at their own level. New pupils go and watch classes before deciding what they would like to attend. We obviously hope they will take advantage of much of what we have to offer.

Speech and Drama does appear on the timetable and pupils are encouraged to take  L.A.M.D.A. examinations in Verse and Prose, Acting and  Reading for Performance, all of which helps to build confidence. The senior drama club and the senior choir held at lunchtimes.

We feel it is important to give young people responsibilities in school and so Year 9 pupils take the four year olds in to lunch, help them get their meal, sit, eat and talk with them. Year 10 pupils have various responsibilities in the school Houses and organise all sorts of fund raising activities for local charities. Year 11 pupils are prefects but also take on duties as Head Girl or Boy, mentors to the younger pupils, charity co-ordinators and environmental officers.
"In the Senior School, the quality of teaching is good and makes a contribution to the quality of learning and to the standards achieved. The commitment and enthusiasm of the teachers contribute importantly to the pupils` progress and attainment."
