Artists of note. Actually in Alphabetical Order! |
Classical Artists |
This page is to suggest some artists of great merit. This approach is sometimes taken in artist profiles on radio programmes. UK Radio3 is such a station. They always have "composer of the week" with occasional artist ones too - This includes conductors as well as singers and players. |

John Adams Composer |
He is an interesting composer. One of the "minimalist" school, but not so static as Steve Reich. He worked with Kent Nagano when he was in charge at the Halle. Nice chap too! |
Sir John Barbirolli Conductor |
Leonard Bernstein |
A remarkable talent, composer, pianist, musicologist and conductor too. There is a huge television archive of the latter in illustrated lectures which should soon appear on DVD. He was, perhaps, along with George Gershwin one of the first crossover artists. By that of course I mean West Side Story. |
Look up "The Unanswerd Question" the Norton lectures series, now available on NTSC DVD. |
Pierre Cochereau - Organist |
Famous interpreter and performer - notably at Notre Dame in Paris. |
He also had a major talent for improvisations. Many were recorded and are being transcribed. |
Aaron Copland |
Another American composer, very well known for the "Fanfare For The Common Man", Rodeo, Appalachian Spring and other works. |
Wilhelm Furtwangler Conductor |
Also a composer |
Philip Glass |
Mark Burgess of the Chameleons used music by Glass on the "Sons of God" CD. It works very well. |
James Macmillan |
Has written a number of very striking works. Many are programmatic or have a literary / historical source. |
Krysztov Penderecki |
The Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima is a gripping statement! There are also works like the St Luke Passion on a huge scale. The Violin concerto is also approachable. |
Einojuhani Rautavaara |
See Philadelphia Orch link. Also Ondine Records.(8th. Symphony) Catalyst releases also. |
Finnish composer. Works include the "CantusArcticus" an intriguing blend of orchestral sound and birdsong. |
Andres Segovia Guitar |
Brought the guitar deservedly into the foreground. |
Yma Sumac was a Peruvian singer with a huge vocal range. She is well worth looking up. |
Suggestions soon. |
Arturo Toscanini Conductor |
Extensive legacy on record - (and on radio recordings) now on CD |
John Tavener |
Not to be confused with John Taverner, another English composer oddly enough. "The Celtic Requiem" and "In Alium" are both very interesting! The former was released on the Apple label. There are also BBC Prom tapes, worth issuing! |
Scott Walker (Engel) |
He is not only a great singer, but also a writer and producer. |
Bruno Walter Conductor |
Mahler pioneer. Many famous recordings - notably Symphony #9 in Berlin1939. |
