Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How do I manually install the database from the CD? [back]

  1. A directory called 'Critical Incidents' should be created in the Program Files directory, where the front end file (Critinc00v2.mde or Critinc97v2.mde) should be stored. The path would therefore look like thisC:\Program Files\Critical Incidents\

  2. Copy the ‘Read this first please.htm’ file to the same place

  3. We recommend that the data file (CritincData.mde) is copied to an area which is regularly backed up; where precisely it is best placed will depend upon your local circumstances. The installer programme places it with the ‘front end’ file, but you can move it if you wish.

  4. Files are stored on CD as read-only files. You need to change this to allow you to store data. Therefore run Windows Explorer, select each of the files just stored, and view their properties. This is done by selecting the file, right button clicking, and selecting properties, and then un-checking the read-only box.

  5.  If you haven’t got a copy of Microsoft ‘Access’ 2000 or ’97, run the file ‘AccessRTInstall.exe’ to install the free runtime version of Access 2000.

  6. You should then run Access, and open the front end file (Critinc00v2.mde or Critinc97v2.mde)

  7. Wherever you place the data file, BACK IT UP REGULARLY!

My screen does not show the database correctly? [back]

This database is designed to run at a screen area of 1024 x 768 or higher. If the front screen only shows part of the motto below the college arms, your screen area is set too low, and needs raising.

To do this, close the database again and right button click on a blank part of the windows desktop.

Select 'Properties', click the 'Settings' tab, and move the slider labelled 'Screen Area’ to 1024 x 768 or higher.

Please use High Color or True Color. In 256 colours, some of your colours may come out with a curious hatching, making them difficult to read.

I have an error 3026 when trying to install? [back]

We are currently trying to establish the cause of this error and are very sorry for the inconvenience this must have caused.

We suspect that this may have something to do with the permissions on the hospital network. However, to make sure that the installation is correct, please locate the CritInc97v2.mde or CritInc00v2.mde and CritIncData.mde files on your computer hard disk and ensure that they are not marked as read-only (see Installation - Practice - point 3 on the Read This First Please.htm file). (Please note that all files on CDs are read-only.)  The files will have been installed to the place identified during the installation procedure. The default is C:\Program Files\Critical Incidents.  If they are read-only, please uncheck the boxes; if they are not, please contact your network administrator to confirm that you do have full write permission on the networked folder (the part of the disk holding the database).

To ensure that the disk is not faulty, try installing the database onto a stand-alone computer, ie, not on a network.
