President's Address and Club Work Programme 2007 - 2008

Derek Goodman, President for the 2007 - 2008

Presidential Address, 2nd July 2007

In writing this, I am very aware that I am taking over the presidency of our club after a very successful year under Michael Archer's leadership. I would like to pay tribute to him for the way in which he has guided us through the year and I believe it has been a period of success. We have managed to raise enough to pay for the wheelchair taxi that has now been delivered to LOROS and we have successfully completed a number of events that have been as varied as pub skittles and classical music. We have also revised our constitution, subject to club approval, so that it meets the requirements of a Twenty-first Century Rotary club. We now have a basis for developing the new links with the Guimaraes Club in Portugal and our international committee will continue to progress these.

It has also been a year that has been the ninetieth anniversary of the club. We are all proud of that achievement and it was marked with a dinner in the Ramada Jarvis Hotel where more that 300 people shared our celebrations. We also had a ninetieth anniversary Carol Concert in Leicester Cathedral where we were ably assisted by the pupils of Leicester High School for Girls and their staff. We were extremely grateful to them and a large congregation took part in a lively Christmas Festival. ur visit to the theatre after Christmas was also well attended.

More especially, the club has been growing, not just in numbers, but also in fellowship. There has been a real sense that we are proud to be of service in our community and the profile of Rotary in the City of Leicester has been raised considerably. It is my aim to continue this with the co-operation of all the membership. Thank you Michael for this excellent foundation. In the year 2000, Malcolm Macintosh, writer of "Rotary in Leicester", said :"Although, because of its selective membership, the Rotary Club of Leicester is a comparatively small society, its influence in city and county life is disproportionately great". It is my hope that this influence will continue and increase during the coming year.

New challenges lie ahead, not least the news that the Bone Bank is facing an uncertain future. European legislation means that there has to be an ancillary laboratory to the main unit to test all human bone and tissue before it is used. Members will recall that it was in 1991, our 75th anniversary, that we raised the money to start the Bone Bank and we have been asked to support it again to ensure that it continues to be of service to the local and wider community. We are hoping therefore to raise as much of the £65,000 needed as we can during the coming year. This will be my President's project for 2007/8. Already there has been a number of donations from individual rotarians and we are 25% forward towards this aim. The other 75% will be difficult but there will be a number of events during the year to enable us to progress towards our target.

I am convinced that our committee structures are sound and I have not proposed anything more than minor changes to their responsibilities.

The areas of work for the coming year are as follows:

90th Special Project Committee (Rtn J Nisbet)

This group has done a lot of work during the past year and will shortly be coming to the club with some proposals for the way ahead.

Benevolent Committee (PP Peter Collier)

This committee is looking to widening its area of work amongst various good causes. It would also value a greater input from Rotarians by means of gift aided standing orders.

Club Service Committee ( PP Martin Page)

The work of Club Service is basically to ensure the smooth running of the club and the various returns that are necessary. It will, however, have a wider function to arrange and oversee the various events that will contribute to raising the money for the Bone Bank. In this context, there is an auction of promises to be launched on Handover Day and there is to be a Sportsmen's Dinner in October.

Community Service Committee (Rtn M. Simpson)

The committee will continue the work of previous committees with special emphasis on the Calvert Trust, Kids Out, Euro Scholar, Stroke Awareness, RYLA, Age Concern Christmas lunch and Christmas shopping for the elderly.

Fellowship Committee (Rtn Gillian Childs)

I have asked this committee to become responsible for the social events in the club during the coming year. This has formerly been the responsibility of Club Service but it seems to me more logical that this committee should arrange events designed to foster fellowship. There will also be the opportunity for individual rotarians to visit other clubs, both for Charter events and for ordinary club meetings.

Foundation Committee (PP Clive Smith)

The work of Foundation assumes great importance since we again will have at least two scholars to host and counsel. The committee will continue to foster good relations with the universities in order to ensure that the international scholars are well cared for academically and to oversee their visits to clubs in the District. The idea of an international evening in the autumn is being considered.

International Committee (Rtn Peter Lightfoot)

The international committee is responsible for the selection and oversight of international projects and is planning for the future. In addition, it will be looking to extend the links with the Guimaraes Club in Portugal and it is hoped that there will be a visit there during the coming year. In the early part of 2008 they celebrate their 60th anniversary and it would be good to take a group of Rotarians there for that event.

Membership Committee (Rtn Patrick Parry)

New members are vital to the success and good health of the club and this committee will be working hard to increase membership in line with our desire to play as large a part in the City and County as is feasible. Patrick has attended various seminars about membership and will be passing on the ideas to his committee. However, he emphasises that new members will only increase in number when every Rotarian is constantly seeking to introduce friends and acquaintances to the club. There was a time, in another era, when this club had more than 160 members. Things are different now but there is the capacity in a city such as Leicester to increase our membership.

Topics Committee (Rtn Hilary Stafford)

This committee already has a number of very interesting speakers arranged for the months of July, August and September and a number of other dates further into the future. Hilary is anxious to widen the net as far as is possible and would be grateful for ideas from members.

Visiting Committee (PP Derek Hole)

Keeping in touch with and caring for Rotarians who are not well is a vital part of fellowship. The committee will also seek to support widows of former Rotarians and to continue the good work done in previous years.

Vocational Committee (PP Michael Archer)

I am delighted that the immediate past president has agreed to chair this committee. Under Robert Mansfield's guidance the variety of outings of special interest has been encouraging and I trust that the committee will regard this work as an important part of its remit.

Youth Opportunities Committee (PP Moira Bartlett)

This committee is planning to begin Rotakids once the new Samworth Academy is up and running. It also has plans for a new Rotaract Club in the University of Leicester that would link up with the Guimaraes club.

Club Protection Officer for Children and Vulnerable Adults (PP Michael Marvell)

Michael has volunteered to undertake this important role. He will be ensuring, among other matters, that all members of the club involved with children or vulnerable people have proper CRB clearance.

General:

The officers of the club have changed as will be seen from the new Directory, ably produced by Rtn David Fulford. I am pleased that the club has elected Rtn Robert Mansfield to be Vice-President for the coming year. One of the changes to the constitution is to enable him as soon as possible to be named as president-elect for the coming year. He can then respond to District invitations which are always to the President Elect. Tony Jarvis has agreed to continue his sterling work as our treasurer. The new secretary of the club will be Rtn. Bob Collins who has been an excellent assistant secretary. His place in that role is taken by Rtn. Cathy Sansom and I am grateful to her for being willing to take on this responsibility. Graeme Lea will join Rtns John Saunders, Moira Bartlett and Patrick Boylan as District Councillors.

In 1980, Brian Thompson ( President 1977-1978) wrote: "The story of the Rotary Club of Leicester shows that members of the club have been faithful to the Rotary object of being of service through their personal, business and community life."  If we can achieve that once more in 2007/8, we will make our mark in the City and County of Leicester.
