Our Twin Club: Rotary Club of Guimaraes, near Porto, Portugal

Michael Archer, the Club's 2006-7 President, and two other members of the Guimaraes Rotary Club visited Leicester in March 2007 following a visit by the President and two other members of our Club in Autumn 2006, in each case to explore the possibility of proceeding to a formal Rotary Twinning arrangement between the Clubs.

In June 2007 the twinning was finalised with an exchange of Twinning Certificates (above) between the two Clubs, and a party from Leicester, led by the President, Derek Goodman, joined the Guimaraes Club in celebrating its 60th Charter Anniversary on Thursday 27th March.

The two Clubs have now submitted to the Rotary Foundation for supplementary funding a joint project: to create two "sensory Rooms" for both children and adults with cerebral palsy in a centre in Guimaraes which supports approx. 300 - roughly half children and half adult.  One room will provide such things as a musical water bed, pall pool, sound and light panel, bubble columns and a soft play sofa.  The second room will provide tactile walls, a massage mat, sol et lumière panels, swing frame and proejctors with music. The total cost is around £35,000, and our Club's share of this will be at least £5,500 (possibly more depending on the exchange rate to the dollar - which is the working currency for Rotary Foundation grants).

The Guimaraes Club's Portuguese, English and French website is at: http://www.rotaryguimaraes.org/
