Burma Cyclone Disaster

On 14th May the Club despatched funds to the ShelterBox headquarters for two more Shelter Boxes in response to the urgent appeal for help with the Burma disaster from Rotary in Britian and Ireland, following the two boxes from the Club distributed from Kabul, Afghanistan, on 20th February 2008. Furthervemergency fund-raising within the Club is in progress and it is hoped to be able to fund further Shelter Boxes very soon.

A project of the Rotary Club of Helston, Cornwall, the ShelterBox scheme provides through its own agents on the ground in disaster areas vital emergency support for those left homeless.   Each Shelter Box contains a modern design robust and easy to erect tent for a family group of up to 10 people with the necessary bedding, together with supporting equipment and supplies, such as basic tools and water-purification materials.

Our Twin Club: Rotary Club of Guimaraes, Portugal

Michael Archer, the Club's 2006-7 President, and two other members of the Guimaraes Rotary Club visited Leicester in March 2007 following a visit by the President and two other members of our Club in Autumn 2006, in each case to explore the possibility of proceeding to a formal Rotary Twinning arrangement between the Clubs.

In June 2007 the twinning was finalised with an exchange of Twinning Certificates (above) between the two Clubs, and a party from Leicester, led by the President, Derek Goodman, joined   the Guimaraes Club in celebrating its 60th Charter Anniversary on Thursday 27th March. The International Committees of the two Clubs are now working on a joint Rotary Foundation project.
