Hello all! It seems to me that I am not the only one who likes the songs
sung by Mary Hopkin. I am glad about this fact but at the same time
I very much respect Mary's choice that she made about thirty years ago:
not to be pushed by publicity, big money and paparazzis! When I was a teenager I was though disappointed
about the fact that the only time I would have truly appreciated to see
in TV the Eurovision song contest, Finland chose not to participate!I continue to be an eager fan and am happy about this guest book.
Greetings Markku

I first heard Mary Hopkin back in the early seventies when our radio
station got a demo of the album "Those Were The Days". I immediately
taped it on an old mono reel to reel machine and began to look for my
own copy of the album. It wasn't until today when I thought to look on
Amazon.com that I was able to find it. It ships is 24 hours and I can
hardly wait. Besides being beautiful, the neat thing about her voice is
that I can sing along with it about an octive down. Thanks for the web
site. And, if Mary ever stops by and reads this, "Hello Mary!!"

When I was 11, 1971, I heard a wonderful song at the orthodontist's
office where I was having my braces tightened. It was so striking to
me that I have remembered many lines from it for nearly 30 years
without ever knowing the title or singer... "In a treehouse, here we
lay, above the blue sea spray..... Sing a song of Temma Harbour, climb
a coconut tree, catch a fish and light the fire, drink some wine with
me...." At the time, I was into Pippi Longstocking books,
particularly "Pippi in the South Seas," and the song tapped into my
youthful imagination. Besides, it was as delightful and carefree a
melody as I have ever heard. You know, I actually moved to the Bahamas
for two years (1983-85) so I could experience that coconut tree :-)
About a year ago, after singing the bit I remembered to someone, they
gave me Mary Hopkin's name. It only just occurred to me to search the
Net for her, which has led me to this site and several other
references. Mary Hopkin, I love you! You have

Hi. I am very happy to find a website for Mary Hopkin! Her famous
song, Those Were The Days made me a fan of her. Thanks to your page, I
could see her recent pictures. I heard the song for the first time
from a Japanese radio program and I happened to record it. I am a fan
of Beatles, too, but I didn't know who sings this song or what the
title of this is. But this tune had been always in my head. And at
last, her album was released as CD in the early 90s and I realized
those questions; who sings it, what the title is. Those Were The Days
have been my favorite since then. My favor for the beatles made me
more fan of her. Or her cute look and voice did. I bought all of her
CD those days. I used to be a teacher of English in Japan. (In fact,
I am a Korean born in Japan) I taught my students her song, Goodbye.
It was a good song to end the class of one year. Well, I wrote too
much, but I would like to listen to her "If You Love Me" and "In My
Life".
Good bye, good bye

I heard "Goodbye" two weeks ago, fell in love with it, but didn't know
who the singer was nor the title or songwriter (Paul McCartney; I did
notice the Beatlesque opening, though). I didn't stop singing it,
researching it on the Net, and by calling up radio stations/record shops
till a knowledgeable record store employee named Skip played the song to
me over the phone! Epiphany! It's an exquisite song and it confirmed my
belief that Paul is one of the top songwriters of all time. Oddly, the
answer was in his biography, which I own. I finally looked in the index,
and both Mary Hopkin and "Goodbye" were listed. Do you know that Twiggy,
of all people, brought her to Paul's attention, and he produced her
first album, found "Those Were the Days" for her, and wrote the lovely
"Goodbye." I hope she's alive and well. Searching the web, I can't
believe there are many Mary sites and many other Hopkinheads, but hello
out there-- you have great taste!-----------------------------

There's some thing about Mary....I've only just rediscovered Mary Hopkin after about a thirty year lay
off, and even though i loved her as a kid i've never really appreciated
her until now. Nobody does justice to Ralph Mc Tell's Streets of London
like Mary, such pathos and the folk song Water, paper -&- clay from the
album "Earth Song/Ocean Song" is a standout.I only hope a new
generation of fans will come to discover the talents of this wonderful
artist. One who has remained so true to her craft.Bless you Mary Hopkin.

Finally, in my opinion, the major contribution Mary gave to the music
business was the album, "Earth Song/Ocean Song". This album is just an
amazing work by a very talented singer who knew what she wanted, but
was never allowed to do it! This album is as fresh now as it was when
first released twenty-eight years ago, with every single song an
absolute gem. To me, this was Mary at the height of her career as she
proved beyond any doubt whatsoever that she is a great folk artist and
not, as I have heard mention, a here today gone tomorrow, pop singer.
For recording this album alone, I would say that Mary will always find
an audience, as a lot of young people continue to enjoy listening to
it. Isn't that the sign of a great artist and perhaps, just perhaps, a
Megastar?

I think Mike Blackburn in right in what he said, but he could have been
a bit more tactful. Mary Hopkin was never a major star, nor a
phenomenon, as she hasn't the personality of a great show business
celebrity. Mary has said on many occasions that she enjoys: "being at
home and writing songs."However, for a lady who hates the entertainment business as much as
Mary does, she certainly became an International star with enduring
appeal. Sadly, she never reached her full potential as an artist, but
as Mike says, truly great artists never do.I have no doubt that Mary could have been the Madonna of her day, had
she "used" the establishment in the same way the establishment was
using her. An example of this is her refusal to record a second album
with Macca. Would any other singer have refused to record an album
with Sir Paul McCartney becuase it wasn't going to be a folk album?--------------------

Oh I forgot, the apostrophe issue. Who cares. I know I should have
had a question mark after "who cares" instead of the period, but no one
is perfect. If we were all perfect and used apostrophes, etc., and if
everything were perfect, then God would have more time on His hands to
do nothing. It's these imperfections that keep us in touch with Him.
Hey! That's almost quoteable and I just now wrote that. Hmmm, are you
sure maybe Mary's not a superstar? Well as I said over and over
again. In my heart, Mary is a glittery shiny star. If you really want
to know, people who were asked to do the Ed Sullivan Show only got
there because Mr. Sullivan was picky and only wanted Superstars.
That's a fact. Albano

(Continued) Geometry, I barely passed with a 65 in highschool, and yet
I go off on "tangents" quite easily. Now, looking at the person Mary, in my opinion, to me persnally, she
deserves every bit of credit for her achievements. Mary, like every
other artists, has a following. Mary has had me and still has me, if
she wants to keep me, for over 30 years. I was 8 years old when I

voice incredibly pure, but no, never a superstar. Also - please stop using apostrophes for plurals - it is auditions, not

superstar? Of course, if you want to be technical, the word superstar
does not apply to humans. Superstar to me refers to the Almighty God.
I don't think anyone can even compete against God's stardom. If anyone
attempts to, boy do I have questions for that person. Yeah sure, there
are probably people who think they're God. Ok, I went off on a tangent

I am the Billy that was at the Largs concert with my wife Mary, yes
another Mary. It was a great pleasure to meet Pat and her family who are
super keen Mary Hopkin fans. I saw Mary in the Tommy Steele show in
Blackpool in 1971 and she was fantastic. At Largs Mary proved that she
still has the voice of an angel and I realised a lifetimes ambition to
meet her. I had photographs taken with her and got her autograph, she is
extremely nice and we all did our best to persuade her to perform and
record more often, I don't think we succeeded. My wife was not really a
fan of Mary but she is now after hearing her sing live, much better than
on a recording. The Largs concert took place on the 31 st. aniversary of
the release of "Those Were The Days", a fact that Mary herself had
forgotten. Thanks Pat for a great web site and keep up the good work.

Hello, and greetings from CanadaI was listening to some music of the latter 60's while surfing the net,

It is wonderful to see Mary's popularity continue towards and into the
next millenium. Right now she is preparing to do a short tour. I
understand her feelings about touring, but perhaps if enough of us ask for
it she will do some more recording, or at least rerelease some of her
previous recordings. Everyone (including me) seems to be after a copy of

whoever holds the rights and the master to do a limited edition release of
this particular album. Any ideas? Any takers? Pat - has this been tried

I remember hearing Mary sing "Goodbye" from a cassette tape recorder
that another student in my class (grade 5) named Betty Muise had just
been given. The sound was beautiful, and I remembered the name. About
ten years ago (19 years after I heard her voice the first time) I found
a couple of 45's and an LP; "Earth Song - Ocean Song". That was and
remains my favourite album. Do you have any idea where I might find a
recently released CD of "Earth Song - Ocean Song"? I think you should
make some recordings of English folk songs in a pure but polished form,
just like "Turn Turn Turn". I'll buy at least one!
Thanks for the wonderful music!------------------------

I suddenly stumbled upon the "Those were the days" CD album today and
purchased it immediately. I just had to have it. My Lp was really worn
down and scratched. The CD is really marvelous.
I have the LP but my turntable's junked so it's just great to hear
Mary's songs again after 25 years. That includes a few tracks I've not
heard before. It makes my day!

Just looking for Mary Hopkins album from my past. Her album has many
memories for me. Young love was one song I remember from her album
along with those were the days.

Hello! I am so glad that there is tribute webpage for the great Mary
Hopkin! I have been searching for a Mary Hopkin related website on the
internet for some time now, and now I have found it! I live in Alabama and
have been a huge fan of Mary Hopkin for many years. I
was born about the time "Those Were the Days" was first released, and I
just love all of Mary's music and songs. Her Postcard album is one of my
all time favourite recordings. Mary's muisc that she recorded for the
Apple lable is truely wonderful. I also like her Welsh language recordings
as well. I wish that the U.S. record companies would have been as eager to
reissue all of Mary's recordings as they have other artists, and hopefully
they will. I just wanted to say that I think this Mary Hopkin website is
great, as is Mary's music. I am so happy to have found it. As a big fan of
Mary's I wish her all of the best and a big
"Thank you" for all of the wonderful music.--------------------

It's really fantastic to find, after so long search, such a nice place
to see, read and enjoy all that was produced during those Starry Years.
Congratulations Pat. God bless you. Mary Hopkin brings with her voice
everything from that past time and still feeds ours hopes as she did in
our teens. He has the sweetest voice I ever heard. I would like to
have a way to get "SPIRIT".

It's almost eerie seeing the title "Mary Hopkin Friendly Society" in 1990.
I still have an application for the original Friendly Society that I
received in 1970 at the age of 12 [and accompanying autographed photo].
Almost like time hasn't passed. I agree with Craig in his entry -- I'd
love to see Mary perform live [but, Canada's a bit far for me in the
southwest US -- so, I guess she'd have to do two gigs G]. I only have a
faint memory of her performing (probably lip syncing, considering it was
about 1969) on a summer replacement television show. It's great to see all the testimonies to Mary Hopkin -- maybe she was just
a little ahead of her time in the 60's. The interest in the 90's is
astounding. Thanks for another wonderful site, Pat!David~

I'm glad that Pat has put this site together. I live in the USA.....
about 30 miles north of New York City. Would like to obtain more of Mary
Hopkin's recordings. I only have vinyls of "Post Card" (and the CD)and
"Earth Song / Ocean Song". I am looking for more of MH's recordings.
Love to have on CD. If you can help, or would like to send a note,
please do so....... Thanks for reading this. The best to you!!!

Hello Pat, Mary and all of Mary's fans!
Thank-you again Pat for providing us Mary Hopkin fans with such an
adoring site. We are indeed from all four corners of the world, and
Mary's music touches us like no other female vocalist can. I cherish my
Mary LPs, 45s and 8-tracks, and am forever thankful to the folks at
Capitol for rereleasing her Apple albums on CD. Her music is constantly
played in my house, and I sing her songs whenever I catch a fish or
light a fire.
I will check into the new Friendly Society site often; I regularly
visited the old InfoSite and I will be a frequent guest of the new one.
I'll repeat a dream of mine, one that I wrote about in the previous
site's guestbook: I would love to see Mary perform in concert one day.
Name a city, venue and time, for I will be there. Mary, your fans from
Canada and no doubt from around the world would love to hear that
glorious voice of yours in concert!
With my highest compliments for the exhaustive work you have done in
creating this site
