DESCRIPTION

What Jack Dalby said in 1985.
"The canal curves to the north east, passing a milestone 46½ (miles from Semington) lying on the bank. Ardington March Lock then appears; this is another fine example of a lock untouched since abandonment. The frame of the top gate, complete with its balance beam, is still in position but only one bottom gate survives.
The drain at 432922 once dived under the canal, the culvert later being opened out to drain the bed. Not far beyond the canal has been filled in and the ground cultivated but a bridle path marks the line to the Cow Common road at 441929. The former fine stone arch bridge at this point was demolished in 1965 to allow heavy loads to be carried to Didcot Power Station, then building."

RESTORATION

No plans yet.
This site will be underneath the Thames Water Reservoir, if it is ever built. Otherwise it has few practical problems, though the field to the east of Cow Common Lane will be cut (back) in two. We will probably have to re-site Steventon Lock to the east of Cow Common Lane, to give headroom under the road.

RIGHT OF WAY

The towpath is not a public right of way for the first 200 yards or so from the railway bridge, but can be reached by one of a number of footpaths which converge at 427918 (see map).
From here it is a bridleway all the way to Cow Common Lane Bridge.
